How to Build Employee Engagement

Employee engagement is one of those intangible aspects within the workplace that employers must have to attain organizational goals. According to human resources professionals, employee engagement means your work force is capable of performing their job duties, enthusiastic about working in a collegial environment and motivated to perform their duties responsibly. Improving employee engagement requires a variety of methods; the effectiveness of these methods is generally discovered by trial and error. Looking at employee surveys and absenteeism rates can measure the level of current employee engagement.

• Design an employee opinion survey to elicit information about employee attitudes pertaining to the workplace.

• Include questions about working conditions, interpersonal relationships, effective leadership, compensation and benefits, occupational demands and workplace safety.

• Assure employees that their answers are confidential and anonymous. Be prepared to explain why you're conducting a survey; employees will ask questions about its purpose.

• In addition to explaining the meaning of employee engagement, describe how survey responses assist employers in improving workplace conditions.

• Analyze your workplace for indicators of job satisfaction, motivation and morale.

• Absenteeism is just one indicator of lack of interest. Some absences are for legitimate reasons; however, excessive absenteeism that affects productivity and teamwork is problematic.

• Improving employee satisfaction can minimize the consequences of absenteeism and low productivity.

• A fundamental step to motivation is providing employees with the necessary tools to perform their job duties.

• Imagine being assigned a task without direction, guidance or even the skills required to perform the task.

• Employees who receive little or no guidance from supervisors lack motivation and enthusiasm.

• Utilize survey responses to develop action plans that address specific employee concerns and announce any changes with employees so they understand survey responses are part of a strategic plan to improve satisfaction levels.

• This is an excellent path to increase employee morale and, thus, employee engagement. If your work force exhibits signs of low morale, it's likely employee engagement is also low or even nonexistent.

• Maintaining communication with employees about organizational change and updates is the best way to demonstrate how the company values the input, feedback and contributions of its work force.

• Observe changes to workplace satisfaction after developing action plans from the survey responses.

• Determine what significant changes occurred as a result of increasing interaction with employees and soliciting feedback.

• Continue regular employee opinion surveys on an annual basis and refer to previous survey results to illustrate improvements to your work force.
