A student from Bangladesh doing his MA in Applied Linguistics, in the UK, approached me for help. I came across the following website and found it quite useful to assess my own knowledge. Our daughter, in the UK, and my brother in India took the tests. Based on that, I have hypothesised that people who have studied in English Medium from early stages will do better in those tests than those that have studied in their own vernacular. Also, those that have studied English as a language in Higher Studies and those that have a habit of reading newspapers, listening to the radio and/or watch tv programmes in English, will also score higher points.
Hence I would much appreciate it, if members at CiteHR could spend a few minutes and take the tests and give me the results by sending me a Private Message. The information that you provide will be dealt with very confidentially and only an aggregated result will be give at CiteHR.
Please also include some general information as to your background:
1. Since what age did you study in English medium?
2. Do you communicate in English with colleagues at work?
3. Did you study English as a language in you degree course?
4. Do you read newspapers and note unfamiliar words?

The online test would help everyone to know where he stands as far as English is concerned. Very interesting tests which could help you further in competitive exams also.

Dear Mr Narasimhan K,
Thanks for taking initiative. Quality of English is far from satisfactory in India. This unsatisfactoriness is a result of apathy that is shown to improve oneself. It is not a question whether one has studied in English medium school or in vernacular medium. I have experience of persons having poor English though they studied in English medium. In contrast, I have met stalwarts of English though they studied in local language.
What matters is continuous learning and continuous improvement. When people are complacent then even god can not change them!
Anyway, I will take the test but then these are more useful for my children. I will refer the link to them also.
Thanks,
Dinesh Divekar
