Hi All,
The concept of leadership has been much researched and developed over time. It is said that leadership is a skill essential in managing today's organizations. Inumerable questions have been raised about leadership..... what is Leadership? Who are leaders & who are their followers? Can leaders be followers? Can we become leaders or are we born leaders? Are managers and leaders different?
I wish to gain an insight into the muti faceted concept of leadership by seeking answers.
What do you think?????
Is it possible to develop leadership competencies in managers to enable them to identify leadership situations and deal with them accordingly?

Don't worry, Sandhya. Leadership is the most misunderstood concept in India. By the term, we mean boldness, self-confidence, and sacrifice. That is what a typical Indian psyche understands from Leadership.
Leadership is a constantly evolving concept. There was a command and control type of leadership until the mid-20th century. But after we gained independence, the concept meant effective management, decision-making, risk-taking, and entrepreneurship. It then slowly evolved to its current understanding of Transformative leadership (Warren Bennis). However, there are also servant leadership, Primal leadership, Transparent leadership, Level 5 leadership, etc.

Hi all!
Actually, leadership is all about being motivated and directing others on the same track. It's about providing self and others with insights towards the practical aspects and the hardcore realities attached to them. It's about leading, providing, and increasing the self-motivation of the ones you lead.
Thank you!

Dear Sandhya,
You have raised too many questions though your post is small. Answers to your questions can be found in any ordinary book on organizational behavior. These topics are discussed extensively in those books. Secondly, there are books on leadership itself. Read any book and get your questions answered.
However, let me reply to your last question. You have asked, "Is it possible to develop leadership competencies in managers to enable them to identify leadership situations and deal with them accordingly?"
My answer is yes, it is possible to develop leadership competencies in managers. But it requires a lot of organizational maturity, and systems and processes must be stabilized in your company. You must have sufficient examples of your own company staff wherein they showed leadership or failed to show it. Secondly, to develop these modules, your training department must work very closely with the operations or other departments.
To grow managers into leaders, you must have a Leadership Development Program (LDP) well in place. It can stretch up to two years as well. Whatever training is imparted to the managers must be recorded, and their change in behavior must be measured and monitored closely. Their promotion should be based on the competencies required for the future position and should not be on past achievements.
Lastly, these projects require a lot of top management support. Smaller companies think that they cannot afford to have LDPs. In the bargain, they send their managers to some outbound training, make them walk on fire, etc. A couple of months later, things are back to square one!
I have developed an LDP module. Though not executed as of now, I have given a quotation to one of the MNCs.
By the way, I am into soft skills, behavioral, and management training. Predominantly, I handle training for managers. To make you aware of my training activities, I have attached my Training e-Brochure to this post. It would be my pleasure to train managers of your company on leadership.
Thanks,
