Hi,

Regarding my concern, I suggest some ways to reduce absenteeism:

1. Write an Attendance Policy.
2. Set Clear Attendance Expectations.
3. Reward Good Attendance.
4. Provide Employee Support.
5. Properly inform and regularly update your employees about your standards and policies regarding absenteeism.

Thank you.

Aditya has clearly mentioned good ideas to control absenteeism. What is the percentage of absenteeism? Analyze the trend of absenteeism. One needs to address the root causes of absenteeism. Is it a symptom of stress, poor working conditions, or some unhappiness of workers? Ignoring absenteeism will not make it go away and may, rather, worsen the situation. One thing management must determine is whether the absence is innocent or culpable.

Checklist for management: Track absences, warn, provide a chance to improve absentee records, and finally, be consistent in how you deal with absenteeism. Consistent interaction with workers and understanding them will help a lot.

what if absenteeism is seasonal like harvesting or marriage seasons? We have tried counseling as well as disciplinary action but nothing works. I am talking about absenteeism in coal mining industry.

Hi Srinivas,

In such cases, the root cause needs to be identified before taking any action because every action leads to some desirable and some undesirable results. Even for any sudden change in any process, the organization might face resistance from employees.

So, following a structured approach for behavioral training intervention and/or process improvement intervention will be beneficial.
