Dear Suri Babu,

This is a good question that is relevant to those innumerable MBAs who graduated not from institutes of national and international repute like IIMs but from some good institutes and yet want to be competitive on par with their privileged brothers in terms of performance. It is my personal opinion that:

1) Such MBAs should try to get into consulting firms that undertake various HR projects like talent management, performance evaluation, competency mapping, or compensation designing to understand how the concepts work in practice.

2) They can simultaneously pursue a certification program in HR.

3) The exposure to consulting and the qualification in the certification program will help an ordinary MBA to develop a competitive skill set and knowledge to enable him to gain entry into a corporate of repute and to acquit himself well in his job with confidence and the gait of a seasoned professional.

Dear Sai Kumar,

I totally agree with you. The actual concept behind my write-up is that most of the MBA colleges are not catering to the actual needs of management professionals. Instead, they are maintaining the colleges for the sole purpose of issuing degrees. A significant number of students, either from educationally and economically backward backgrounds or coming from rural areas, pursue MBAs without acquiring practical knowledge and professional feedback. Such students have to work hard to gain professional experience and become effective management professionals by utilizing opportunities in society at large and getting involved in the activities of industries and institutions.
