Dear Aparna Ji,
Holidays and weekly offs falling in between leave period would be treated as leave. In other words, one cannot enjoy benefits of holidays and weekly offs which intervene leave period. However, holidays and weekly offs preceding or succeeding leave period are allowed as holidays and weekly offs prefixing or suffixing to leave. This applies to only earned leave (privilege leave), sick leave, maternity leave/paternity leave, leave without pay etc.. When casual leave is applied for, intervening holidays and weekly offs are allowed.
Example 1 (condition- you observe five day week from Monday to Friday).
One applies for 5 leave earned leave/privilege leave from 08-08-2011 to 12-08-2011. One will be sanctioned only 5 day EL/PL and one's leave account will be debited for only 5 days EL/PL but one will be actually availing of Saturdays, Sundays and public holiday prefixed and suffixed to one's leave. To be precise, 06-08-2011 and 07-08-2011 would be prefixed to leave and 13-08-2011, 14-08-2011 & 15-08-2011 would be suffixed to leave.
Example 2 for casual leave ( condition: you observe 5 day week from Monday to Friday)
One applies for and is sanctioned two day casual leave on 12-08-2011 and 16-08-2011 respectively. One will get benefit of intervening weely offs and holiday. Only two CL will be debited to one's account but in effect one will get continuous benefit of 5 days off
(13-08-2011 being Saturday, 14-08-2011 being Sunday and 15-08-2011 being national holiday).
Example 3
If someone has no casual leave to his/her credit and he/she needs only two day leave on 12-08-2011 and 16-08-2011. In this case, he/she will have to apply for 5 day PL/EL from 12-08-2011 to 16-08-2011. The employee would not get benefit of intervening weekly offs and national holiday. These will be counted as leave period because leave begins and ends as leave. No weekly offs/holidays can be allowed in between leave.
Please sit with calendar and try to understand these examples. In case you find any difficulty in understanding these, please do not hesitate to revert back.
How to work out leave due is a different question. I am not touching it now.
Thanks & regards

Dear Jagdish Ji,
If the leave applied for is earned leave(PL) or sick leave or leave without pay or maternity leave, then entire period from 10.08.2011 to 17.08.2011 would be treated as leave and no intervening holidays falling on 12.08.2011 and 15.08.2011 can be counted as holidays. Thanks & regards
