My school is forcing me to come on 15th August, and as you know, it's a national holiday. Even they are not paying me double salary on that day. Please suggest to me, should I go, or do I have the right to ask for double salary for that particular day? Please give me your valuable and helpful suggestions.

Dear Blizz,

What is your designation? Are you a teacher? The education institutions celebrate the Independence Day (ID), and teaching and non-teaching staff are expected to be present to make the celebration smooth.

Many state governments have not declared the "education sector" as an industry. Therefore, provisions of the Industrial Dispute Act do not apply. Thus, a rule for the disbursement of triple salary for working on ID Day does not apply.

Nevertheless, one should not grumble for being required to attend ID functions. This is the day and probably the only day the freedom fighters are remembered. Every citizen is expected to show national fervour, expected to set aside personal chores, and take part in celebrations. The private sector enjoys the holiday, but for the flag-hoisting ceremony, they go to the workplace and participate in celebrations. They do this without making noises under their breath.

Thanks,

If the school authorities are asking you to come for the flag hoisting, you may have to go and you cannot claim extra wages for that.

Dear Blizzz,

National Holidays in China (For your reference):

I. General Policy:

Company (School)-recognized and observed holidays are those officially designated by the government. Employees (Teachers) are given time off with full pay on Company (School)-recognized holidays. Staff/Employees are given an alternate day off or overtime pay if important work requires attendance on the holiday. If a holiday falls on a Sunday, the following day is usually observed as a holiday. If a holiday falls on an employee's normal day off, the employee is granted an alternate day off at the convenience of the Company (School).

II. List of Holidays:

There are differences from India.

III. Notice of National Holidays:

It is the normal practice for the Company (School) to publish a notice preceding each holiday to allow supervisors (teachers) to schedule the work in their group or arrange the overtime work on the holiday and provide all employees (key staff) confirmation about the day off.

Dear Blizzz,

Just to inform you that no school in India is open for classes on the 15th of August, right? It's only a flag-hoisting occasion followed by maybe a few cultural programs or not. As an Indian, we should all be proud to participate in a flag-hoisting program on the 15th of August.
