Hi Meghana,
I am not agree with this 3 months notice period.. because after putting resignation letter, one's duty is only to handover his all documents and functions to someone..
Moreover keeping an employee for more days, who has resigned is also not good from company point of view..
In general companies practice a month notice for a confirmed employees and 7 days during probation period..
Hope it would help you to frame the same at your end..

Dear Meghana
Three month's notice period is a lengthy one.
Please note that any employee does not want to stay in any organisation for 3 months after tendering his resignation.
Also please note that it is not advisable to keep resigned employees for such long period.
Once employee has resigned, he will not have intention to contribute anything for the development of organisation.
Instead, he will try to liquidate his remaining leave in his credit
Also from the angle of resigned employee, waiting for 3 months to complete his notice period, the new employer (where he supposed to join) will not wait for such long period.
Considering all, it is adviseable to reduce the notice period of 1 month instead of 3 months.

Hi,
You have raised a valuable point of how long should be a notice period.
All are thinking in the their individual point of view,i mean to say if one gets good job he should have less notice period time to get entered in the new firm. But you should think about the company prospective.
I also feel that the notice period for three months is long but there is one more problem for the company as they have to follow some norms.
For example, one of the HR executive gets a job in other firm and wants to leave so he/she provides with the offer letter and ask for all the documents before leaving from the management. Now the company has to follow certain norms for three months notice period which is standard for companies in India.
More over they have to fill the position which is getting vacant. So if you are in the HR field you know how difficult is to close the position. So they take maximum of time of three months and look for the candidates in the mean time.
There are companies which provide from 15 days to three months of notice period depending upon the candidate relation with the company i.e [Work, experience in the company, relation with all the other employees].And more over it depends on the company position in the market.
So don't think in the individual point of view rather even think about the company and its position. They have to maintain maximum of three months so thats the reason they will.

Meghna:
Interesting topic, in my viewws i think 3 months is a very long journey for a person who had put on his/her papers and which is not a healthy factor for an organization as well because you cant get any output from him what you use to get it from him/her earlier
by which company would get affected with the cost factor coz you have to pay him for 3 months where his productivity would be 50% or it can vary.... so its a better practise to have 30 days notice wherein it can be a win-win situation for both
i think you are clear now
others views are welcome
Thanks

Dear Meghana
For confirmed employee, keeping the notice period for more than 1 month is worthless. Also you have to consider organisations' point of view also. Hence it would be idle to have one month notice only.
For the trainees and employee on probation, one week is enough
