I have 1 year of experience as an HR executive. Now, my designation has been changed to Business Development Executive. I'm confused about taking up the challenge and continuing with the BDE role. Will I have growth in this field in the future? Please suggest which field I should select to grow my career as well.

Dear Madhuri,

You have worked as an HR Executive and now you have been designated as a BDE. Designations hardly matter; what matters is the work and authority. If you feel the work allotted to you is interesting and challenging and moreover, you are confident to handle it, well, there is no reason to deny the new assignment. On the other hand, I always suggest that people of one branch should not restrict their knowledge and understanding to a particular area, but it should be manifold. HR people must know about production, marketing, accounts, business, etc., and vice-versa.

You may have expertise in any field, but hard work, study, good knowledge, sincerity, understanding, fairness, and such qualities are indispensable. I suggest you accept the new assignment and prove you are a good executive by accepting challenges.

Good luck.

Dear Madhuri,

Discuss the roles and responsibilities of a Business Development Executive (BDE) with your boss. If you feel that you are capable of handling the designation, then you should accept it. Actually, you should always say YES and face the challenge. Saying NO to upcoming challenges in your career is not a good practice.

Thank you.

Dear Kulkarni Sir,

Thank you for your valuable suggestions. Yes, my boss felt that I would be capable of doing BDE, which made me happy as I could support his business in generating revenues. However, my only concern is whether I will be able to meet his expectations, as I am a graduate and do not have much experience in the field of management.

Dear Abdullah Sir,

I sincerely thank you for your suggestion. Yes, of course, I have discussed with my boss about the roles and responsibilities. They are fine with me, and I am much confident of completing the work at the earliest. So, I never say no to the work assigned by my higher authorities; I do respect and follow them. However, I am a bit confused about whether the position I have been given is a promotion.

Thank you,

Dear Madhuri,

Challenges exist in every field and profession. The first thing you need to decide is your field of interest.

A Business Development Executive (BDE) profile mainly requires a person to excel in the Communication cycle, Interpersonal Relationships, Soft Skills, and demonstrate flexibility in movement. You will be expected to work towards set targets to achieve business objectives.

As an HR professional, your responsibilities include Recruitment, Inductions, Training and Development, Salary negotiations and preparations, Statutory and Regulatory compliances, CSR activities, Exit formalities, Audits, and sometimes General administrative work.

If you are a beginner, focus on mapping out your career path.

Yes, I agree with Hema Madam.

Firstly, you have to come to a concrete decision about your career. Do you want to make your career in an HR role like recruitment, training, payroll, etc., OR do you want to make a career as a business development executive? Both roles are totally different. So, you have to analyze yourself, study your own strengths and weaknesses, and then come to a conclusion.

For instance, I have been in HR for many years now. If I were asked to go into the field and hunt for business, I may not be able to do this. Do a SWOT analysis of yourself, it will surely help.

Dear Madhuri,

You are at the onset of your career now, hence in my opinion, you should be adaptable to understand and accept newer challenges as it gives you the opportunity of exposure to innovative learning. Having gone through myriad challenges, you may evolve yourself as a probable leader of a separate unit involving varied business activities. Versatility is the need of the hour. Contemplate and decide. Best of luck.
