Dear all,

This is Sanika. One of our employees has done a great job. He completed the project before time and has worked beyond his capacity. I want to appreciate him. However, the issue is that there is no existing system in our company. Therefore, I want to start it from the beginning. Please suggest some techniques that will work as motivation and not be harmful to other employees' motivation.

Thank you.

Why should other employees feel bad if the person is a performer and is given a reward? I understand that he/she must be junior to others in that team. In fact, what you can do is to take feedback from others in the team and share his success so that every other person is aware of his performance. This gives no chance for a biased approach, and others will accept the fact. If it is a monetary reward, then you can explain the criteria on which that particular employee is rated and declare the reward in a meeting so that others will get motivated. If it is a non-monetary reward, you can give a letter of appreciation, an award letter, or a promotion letter (if it is an annual appraisal) for the performance in a meeting where others of that particular team are also called for. In fact, you can also explain how the team and company will grow if everyone strives to perform and excel.

That’s a good initiative which you are trying to start of with.
I do not think it should be a harmful one unless it is communicated properly across the orgn.
You can give him/her a monetary gift, dinner coupon with family, coupon to an entertainment place and etc.
As this is a new initiative you can start with the above ideas right away, meanwhile you can also set some guidelines set to get this award.

Hey hansa, I liked this name -" I appreciate" and "We appreciate" for the awards. If you have any more such kind of recognitions happening in your company why not share in this forum.

Hi Sanika,

There is a software which can help you to overcome this problem. This software helps in measuring the performance of your employees. You can rate the employees, and they too can rate themselves. Accordingly, the appraisal system or reward system can be enhanced. This is a transparent system of measuring the performance and appraising them. You can use it free of cost. It is really helpful. For further details, you can email me.

Tough question. You might want to make a note in his file and include that in his PA review. Alternatively, you might want to ensure that it is in his experience letter once he leaves the company.

I would be apprehensive about such reward systems because they can quickly become politically motivated and less objective due to variances in the rating system. Furthermore, you might want to read an article of mine on this topic. Send me your email address, and I will forward it to you.
