Hi there,

I have been working as an HR recruiter for the last 3 years. Currently, I am serving as a Team Lead in Kerala, Cochin. I am interested in transitioning to a Generalist profile, but I am receiving calls for the same position from everywhere. What should I do? For the Generalist role, they are indicating that they may consider me as a fresher with a significantly lower CTC. I need assistance with this.

Thanks and Regards,
Ayswarya

Hi Aishwarya,

As you mentioned, you are planning to change your role from Recruiter to HR Generalist. Many organizations may treat you as a fresher. Don't worry about being seen as a fresher if you land a better job in a reputable organization.

You can persuade the employer by demonstrating your strong skills as an HR Generalist. To do this, you should familiarize yourself with all the practical, core HR activities. If you have friends who work as HR generalists, seek advice from them on various modules. Alternatively, you can explore the topics on this site to enhance your knowledge.

By taking these steps, you will likely receive better job offers. Wishing you all the best! :)

Hi Sir,

Thank you for your reply. As you mentioned, I don't have any issue with considering me as a fresher in a generalist profile because I don't have any idea in the same. However, the salary package that all the companies are offering is much less than what I am currently receiving. That is the main constraint I am facing.

Thanks and Regards, Ayswarya

Dear Ayswarya,

Please tell us why anyone should pay you more than any other fresher they hire when you, in your own words, have no idea about the field ("...Because I don't have any idea in the same")?

However, if you can reflect on your work experience and explain how it contributes or helps in a GENERALIST's job, you should be able to convince them. For example, when I changed jobs from the industry to teaching, I convinced the college interview panel of how a bit of part-time teaching and industrial experience helped me become a better teacher than a fresher with Teacher Training qualifications.

Echoing Simhan: effective positioning is required.

HR is a vast field. Identify which aspect you enjoy the most and choose relevant courses. It could be in compensation & benefits, psychometrics, competencies, etc.

The term "generalist" is often misunderstood. It does not suggest a lack of knowledge base.
