Hi all,
Hope you are all doing great. I am working as an HR IT recruiter for a reputable consultancy and am seeking corporate openings. I recently had an interview with an MNC company, and there were some questions I struggled to answer. I would appreciate your help with these as it could benefit me in future interviews.
1. If you don't have access to job portals, social networking sites, or the internet, how would you go about filling positions?
2. Why are you interested in transitioning to a corporate role? What aspects are lacking in consultancy that attract you to the corporate environment?
3. How would you persuade a candidate to consider a 3-month contract position, especially if they are currently a permanent employee?
4. Given your experience in a consultancy, why should a company hire you for a corporate position? What additional strengths do you offer compared to corporate recruiters?
5. During the interview, the hiring manager inquired about your salary expectations and later mentioned offering your current salary. How would you justify requesting a higher salary in this scenario?
I appreciate any assistance you can provide.
Regards,
Pooja

Dear Pooja,
Note answers to your question as per my opinion. If you think they are suitable, please reply to me.
Ans.1: I can bring a candidate from local placement agencies and from my relations. Being an HR professional, I have a good network of people. I will find a good candidate and close the position.
Ans.2: In the corporate world, our smartness automatically increases. We can learn professionalism, and dynamism will increase. Decision-making skills can also be enhanced. Many opportunities are available in the corporate sector. I am a very ambitious person, so I also need to grow and prove myself.
Ans.3: It's unethical.
Ans.4: I will give you the best talent and professionals. I will also motivate all employees towards the fulfillment of organizational goals.
Ans.5: Not much more, but some appropriate percentage increase should be considered.
Thank you.

Hi Vikas,
Thanks for your reply.
1. I told the same answer to the interviewer, but whatever I told him, he kept on questioning me. He was extending the question by asking, "If you don't have that also, then what will you do?" like that.
2. I gave a similar answer, but not exactly the same. He asked me, "You have 3 years of experience in consultancy, didn't you learn all this?" like that.
3. I would have answered like that.
Really, this is the worst interview I have come across. Anyway, I need to learn a lot to get a job in corporate. Vikas, can you please guide me for that?

Hello Pooja,
He was just testing how much beyond you can think, the way you perceive things, and also managerial skills. For all questions, it would be better if you're more technical about HR-related topics. Hope you will give your best next time. All the best.

Dear Pooja,
I agree with Vikas; whatever he said is really acceptable, but I would like to add a few more words to the line. As I am working with a German MNC, we have a practice that whenever there is a vacancy generated, we post it with competency requirements on our notice board. If anybody within the organization is interested, we conduct the interview. If we find him as per the requirements, we relocate them and identify competency within the organization for a replacement for the relocated individual. Again, the same policy applies if it is not possible, then we go for external agencies.
Every interview is a learning experience. I have almost 11 years of experience in HR, and I am still learning during the interviews from candidates and they are learning too. So don't worry, be confident.

Hi Pooja,
Ans No. 1: You can go for publication in a newspaper and conduct a walk-in or use local placement agencies or our HR team communication channels.
Ans No. 2: Mostly, corporates are formed for companies with multi-locational plants or businesses. The role of a corporate involves analyzing and forming policies, monitoring MIS or analysis, implementation or execution of policies, audits, and decision-making for multi-location plants as a platform for discussion.
Ans No. 3: The intention behind the question is more important to comment or suggest.
Ans No. 4: Understanding the job description is your core competency, and assessing individuals for the position is crucial. A wrong hiring decision can cause a blunder for the organization. Your extensive experience in recruiting and good knowledge of other companies, gained through regular interaction with client companies, allows you to understand the culture of companies and corporates. By providing the right candidate at the right place, you will add value to the organization.
Ans No. 5: If you offer peanuts, definitely monkeys will come. As a professional, the only answer is career growth in terms of monetary and professional growth.

Hi Pooja,
Here are my answers to your questions:
1. If I don't have access to portals, social networking sites, and the internet, then I would resort to referencing and headhunting. Personally, I believe that portals are just databases, and we cannot solely rely on them for recruitment.
2. Working for a corporation provides more exposure compared to consultancy. It helps in developing decision-making and interpersonal skills.
3. Recruitment involves selling the company to the candidate. If a candidate does not agree to a 3-month contract, it may indicate a lack of effective sales skills in presenting the company.
4. My job specifications align with your job requirements. If you hire me, my responsibilities will increase. I understand that in a corporate environment, I must perform exceptionally well to ensure long-term commitment.
5. I have heard that a typical increase would be around 35%. However, I am not demanding that much of a hike; I am simply expecting a higher salary than my current one.

Hi Pooja,
Let me tell you a few things about interviews. When you are jobless, you may attend interviews where there is no actual vacancy. Companies might organize walk-in interviews just to practice their interviewing skills and train their employees. It's important to view these experiences as opportunities to improve your own interviewing skills. You may need to attend numerous interviews without getting frustrated so that you can confidently tell yourself that you are prepared for any question.
I have come across many consultancies that were established by individuals who struggled to secure a good job themselves. Starting a consultancy became their alternative. I frequently encounter such consultancy firms.
I realize that my response is belated, and your question was posed a while ago. However, I hope this information is helpful for those who continue to face this challenge. Remember, don't worry.
Thank you,
