My company has provided me only a resignation letter. Are a relieving letter and a resignation letter the same? My company gave me a resignation letter alone. Is that sufficient? As the company asked me to resign, I was in shock, and I didn't check the documents properly. The dates of resignation and the date of relieving are the same in the resignation letter. Will it affect my career? Please help me.

Hi,

I would like to clarify two terms:

1) Resignation: This is a letter that an employee submits when they choose to leave the company due to their own conditions. If you were dissatisfied, you simply resigned. It is given by the employee to the employer.

2) Relieving letter: This letter is essentially a written document provided by the company indicating that there is no longer any liability between you and the company. Both parties are now free from their respective services. It is given by the company to the employee.

Having the same dates will not have any effect.

How did your company handle your resignation letter? They must have asked you to submit a resignation for a decent departure from the company. Based on your resignation letter, you must have been relieved from the company. This will facilitate you to obtain an experience certificate for your future employment with clean remarks. There is no harm if the date of resignation and the date of relief are the same. The only thing prospective employers may ask is the reasons for such an urgent exit, for which you should be prepared to give a reasonable answer without blaming the previous employer. It is a basic principle that in any interview, you should not criticize your earlier employer. Wishing you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

I’m sorry it’s actually acceptance of resignation letter and not resignation letter given by the company.

My earlier reply holds good, if it is acceptance of resignation. Basing on the letter given by them, you ask for experience certificate, which would be useful, for future trials. Best of luck.

Hi Akash,

Why did the company provide you with the resignation letter? A resignation letter is given by the employee when they wish to leave the company, and vice versa, the company provides an End of Services contract, End of Training, End of Probation, or Termination Letter to the employee in extreme cases. The date of relieving is your last working day in the organization. You should first ask how they can give you a resignation letter, or clarify your doubts first.

Another important thing is to ask them to provide an Experience Letter that will clearly mention your Name, Designation, Date of Joining, and Last working day.

Dear Akash,

Upon resignation, the company conveys to the employee that his resignation has been accepted, and finally, when dues clearances from both sides are completed, the company issues a relieving letter.

1) ACCEPTANCE OF RESIGNATION: Important points included are the Notice Period, Leave in Lieu of Notice Period, Payment in lieu of Notice period, and Dues clearances.

2) RELIEVING LETTER: It only mentions the fact that you were employed with the company in the capacity of..., employment period details, Date of Relieving. This can also be used as a Service/Experience Certificate.

Hope this clarifies.
