I am working with one manufacturing Company As HR. I am facing one issue with my workers they don't like to wear safety equipment during working. How to Motivate them to follow all safety norms during working.

Dear Viraj,

Mr Nathrao has given short and crisp reply. It covers everything. However, let me elaborate on one point.

Bringing safety-consciousness is time taking process. Your company should have striven to inculcate safety-consciousness right from Day 1. Safety consciousness will come with attitudinal change. But then changing attitude is herculean task.

Start conducting safety awareness programme. Do the safety audit and share the audit results in these awareness programmes. Secondly, imbibe on them what is opposite of safety. Opposite of safety is accidents. Accidents traumatise individual employees, their colleagues, family members etc. Conduct interview of the family members of employees who were involved in the accidents. Tell the employees what financial, psychological impact happens after the accidents. Would they like to repeat this in their homes? Indians are emotional in general. Therefore, a interview of sobbing mother or sister of the employee who met accident will have far greater impact. For the remaining hard-headed residual employees, negative discipline is always there.

All the best!

Dear Viraj,

Mr Dinesh Divekar has explained the matter very well duly covering all tools. I would like to add few more:-

1 First of all you should have a well defined Safety Policy (Conducted by your Safety Officier)

which should cover all safety points related to your organisations.

2 Distribute some printed pamphlets of safety rules, precautions etc. as per your safety requirement.

Display the same on big sign borad at Entry/Exit points, Reception Area, Risk Involved Zone etc.

3 You can start celebrating Safety Day, Safety Week. etc. In which you can arrange a Safety Training.

The trainer will show the major accidents happend due to not following Safety Rules.

Same can happen with them as well.

4 Make small Teams and organize Games, Puzzles, Quizs etc. That will enhance their learning power.

5 Plan some Reward/s (Gift, Certificate, Cash Prize) every month.

Give some points criteria for each employee who will follow the Safety Rules, Instructions.

Give award to No. 1-3 Employee having most points in a month.

6 Yes there must be some Strict Rules as well for those who are not following the instruction intentionally or having negative attitude/thinking.

Such employees can be issued "Show Cause Notice". They should not be given/assigned imp. tasks.

As already stated Safety is a long going process people will aware slowly. Take a proper Budget from the Management for Safety and go on with expertise. Soon you will get the results.

As pointed out by Mr Nathrao safety is everybody's responsibility. Management to supervisors need to follow all PPE.
You need to conduct a survey within the factory involving Management to workers on the importance of safety - questions & answers in a.b or c
1. Do you understand the importance of safety -
2. Do you know why PPE is issued to you -
3. Why most workers dont like to wear their PPE -
4. Can you get injured while working -
5. PPE is to protect you
6. If you are injured, who will suffer more
7. Etc...limit to 10
From the feedbacks you could have some indication on their attitude towards safety. you could plan further training for them.
As Mr Dinesh rightly pointed workers sometimes change when real examples are shown to them.
Enforcement is important and record of constant violators need to maintained

There are lot of videos available in Youtube. Download and show them batches after batches of your employees and show them what happens when they do not wear safety equipment or PPEs. It is a loss for the organisation and also for the individual employees. The family also suffers on account of death or loss of limbs due to accidents. Better to be wise in advance than being regretful later !
