Hi People,
I am a BBM graduate specialized in HR from Bangalore, India with 3 years of prior work experience in HR and CRM currently working as a HR Executive for a construction company in Bahrain since 2 months and i wish to complete Certificate in Personnel Practice from a training institute in Bahrain which is accredited by CIPD UK, after completion of which i would be doing other courses offered by CIPD UK in Bahrain.
I would want to know weather these courses are beneficial for me to move on and to get a better position in an MNC or is it just that only experience counts in getting a better position or a better job coz i am not that familiar with the company's requirements in Bahrain.
Awaiting your response on this!
Thanks & Regards,
Abdulla Shaik

Dear Abdullah
The CIPD certifications are very widely accepted and acknowledge in whole of Middle East and especially in GCC. CPP is a good start, you will be accustomed to these type of courses and CPP is not the end, its just t he beginning. Moreover I wish to advise you pease cultivate an attitude of self development keeping in mind personal growth and not what your company wants. This way you are trying to focus on short term gains rather than focusing on long term goals.

Please go through the posts through the below link you will come across interesting Q&A concerning CIPD.

Hi Sajid,
Thank you very much for the advise, I have contacted Bridge training solutions and i will get enrolled this month for CPP. Currently I am working for mid size construction company in Bahrain and there is no scope for HR in this company there are no policies and procedures to work on everything happens in general and now my question is what is that it takes to get into a bigger company in the Gulf preferably an MNC and work on broader concepts of HR is it that these qualifications like CIPD are enough or is it based on work experience in the Gulf. coz everytime i have applied for a job i get feedbacks that i do not have work experience in the GULF. Please advice waiting for your response in this matter.

Dear Abdullah,

Let me start the Bahraini way, Kefak ante al yaoum. Shlonech ? Shaqbarak ? Hope you are doing fine. Apologies again for responding late

Let me attempt to answer your queries in breakups;
  • Mid size construction company – No policies and procedures to work.
According to me, you had a very right opportunity to develop an HR Department making active each function live step by step, you could have used this opportunity to experiment new methodologies which are being used in present time and which you can learn through different mediums. What you need is the management support and I am sure no management will refuse a systematic way of working with proper job roles and responsibilities.
Don’t wait for readymade systems and procedures else you will land up doing jobs which are routine and monotonous. First of all please make it very clear to yourself as in what area you want to develop yourself. In HR what stream you would want to concentrate on. You have to find out your own interests and capabilities based on it you can proceed further. HR is not an area where you are restricting to files and policies. This is the only department which deals in finding out innovative ways and means to motivate its workforce, enhance their professional and personal lives. The departments’ responsibility is to provide opportunities to its workforce so they demonstrate best of their talent and perform well. To accomplish such important objectives where you can make a difference in peoples lives in personal and in professional, what you need is the zeal and enthusiasm to act and not wait for directions. Hope I am clear in explaining it to you.
  • What it takes to get into a bigger company such as an MNC so that you can get a chance to work on broader concepts of HR.
a. Is it Qualifications such as CIPD?
Yes, among exiting certifications CIPD certifications are very much appreciated especially in Gulf and specifically in Bahrain.

b. Or is it work experience?
Experience is something which you can get once you are taken in a company and it is a result from the support you get from good and recognized certifications. You have to start somewhere. Unless you start how will you gain experience? I can understand your fix, its same chicken first or egg story. Most of the employers / recruiter look for previous gulf experience though you may have had good certifications. But its all upto you how you gather or make yourself in a situation wherein you can add up your work experience. Both have its equal importance in its place. It’s a layman’s question to ask which one is more important. Normally in companies which are governed and owned by traditional home run business families, you will always face such kind of problem situations. But even though as times are changing and the new generation has taken the reins in hand. They have trained and developed themselves from prestigious western universities and are nowadays understanding the underlying problems in people management and implementing newer strategies to curb the age old traditional practices.

Abduallah, its all your own intelligence negotiation, timely decision making will help you shape up your career. As a silent observer what I can suggest you is this is such a field wherein the sky is the limit to develop and attain.

Hi Sajid,

How u been? Sajid as you know i am working as a HR executive in a construction company in Bahrain since 6 months and in the meantime i am pursuing CPP (CIPD U.K) from Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance. Today I got a call from a company which is into the retail and they offered me a job. But i am confused whether to join or not?

I want to know whether changing a job with in six months will have a bad mark on my Resume.

I am of an understanding that the demand for retail sector in GCC is more as compared to the Construction sector. I went through the company's profile and i found it to be really interesting. They operate in the whole of GCC and they are authorized dealers of all major brands across the globe. The position that i am being offered is HR and Administration Supervisor and I will be getting a better salary than this.

My question if i join this company as a HR Supervisor, will this be regarded as and entry to the next level? Should i get in there? What do you feel about this shift?

Awaiting you response in this matter at the earliest.

Thanks & Regards,

Abdulla Shaik
