Dear All,

We generally believe that if we work hard,we will be more successful in life,and if we are more successful,then ,we will automatically be happy.



Recent research in the field of positive psychology shows that this formula is actually backward : happiness brings success,not the other way around. But happiness in this context does not mean just a matter of feeling good by whatever means. If it were, then drug abusers and drunkards would be the happiest people in the world.



In a world of increasing workloads, stress and negativity, we have to be more positive in order to achieve the competitive edge - the HAPPINESS.



How we can achieve this happiness? The way has already been shown and was practiced by great sages of our country last five thousand and odd years ago in the form of following prayer,widely known as ‘Shanti Mantra’:

सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिनः।

सर्वे सन्तु निरामयाः।

सर्वे भद्राणि पश्यन्तु।

मा कश्चित् दुःख भाग्भवेत्॥

(Meaning in English)

"May all be happy,

May all be free from sickness,

May all see things good, and,

May none have misery."

In order to be lead a happy life in this world,we have to practice the formula laid down in the above Shanti (Peace) Mantra, taking the entire human race on this planet as one familyBasudhaiba Kutmbakam(in sanskrit).Only after keeping us in happier mood,we can succeed well in our jobs/professions.

Recently, while going through a book entitled ”Choose the life you want” authored by Talben-Shahar, Phd across one exercise called as ”Loving Kindness Meditation” being conducted by Professor Barbara Fredrickson in his research project in which employees of an organization were encouraged to exercise the love/kindness they felt towards a poor man, a friend, a child, a partner, old parents or themselves. During the seven and odd weeks of study, the participants experienced a decrease in the levels of anxiety and depression, an increase in their general feeling of joy and happiness, improved physical health, better relationship ,and a higher sense of purpose.

Frederickson showed through his experiment , the benefits of heartfelt positivity experienced; by the employees in bringing happiness resulting in positive change in their work life as well personal life.

Let us spend more time experiencing positive emotions. We can do it right now, even for a few seconds or at every other moment in our life or we can put aside 15 to 20 minutes each day for “Loving Kindness Meditation” in stead of engaging ourselves in fruitless gossiping/chitchatting .or idling time.
