Hello seniors,
I am Anup and i am doing my pg course in HR from one of the top colleges in India for HR. I am currently doing my summer internship in one of the "BIG 3" indian IT companies. I joined this company because my seniors said, the summer projects given there are good. I have indeed got a very good summer project but i dont want to start my career here. the reasons being, HR is very sluggish here. The first thing that they ask when I suggest something new is how am i going to explain this to managers. People here really dont respect HR
Can u guide me as to which are the companies from which I can start my career. I really want to start in a good company so that i can get some god exposure. Also please advice me as to which sector would be good to start my career with. Eg: FMCG, pharma, banking etc
Thanks in advance

If you start distinguishing between good and bad companies , my suggestion is you should run your own Venture then working in under any one.
No company is bad at all. Even a grocery shop , a shop in slum area , a pan bidi shop , all are good. All these teach some thing.
Its the employees who work there brings the company in Goodwill. People even don't respect any sales guy who as an uninvited guest enters in any office. But when the sales man provides him with the solution and client is happy, even that client himself respect that sales man. No matter how fresh or experienced he is.
All employees this HR is needed only for recruitment and for salary distribution at time. So there is noting wrong even in that company too.
When they asked you how you going to put that to management it is very much genuine question . Have you realised, did you realise how. You are doing summer internship, you have not even faced situation when HR Heads need to sit with other department heads.
Complaining is very easy , but fining solution is very difficult.
If you want to learn be in that company only. There is always some thing to learn in every orgainzation . You must find the opportunity . No one will come and give you .

Thanks for replying to my post. I am not sure whether you understood my query completely.. However i would like to reply to some points raised in your query
***If you start distinguishing between good and bad companies , my suggestion is you should run your own Venture then working in under any one.**
I dont think so.. there are lots of good companies which have solid hr practices. Even among the IT companies there is Infosys where HR practices are crap (* plz dont give me the number of awards they won..its people's opinion that matters") while companies like accenture which has good hr practices. Now if you want to start your career as an HR with an IT company, there will be a huge differance between the outlook and exposure you get with either of these.

correct..u wil learn a lot of things.. but the amount of learning, the exposure, the experience etc will vary when u start with a grocery and when u start with say a P&G though both deal with fmcg stuff. i hope u agree. the stuff which you are talking happens only in bollywood

its a very generic statement.. all know that.. but for a person to be good, i am sure you would agree that one of the factors is his exposure, his peer group and the environment where he work. its then that his real skills come out. if you work in a company which is very hierarchical and all you do is boot licking the boss, however good you are , there would be a limit to your growth

This line really made me question your exposure and attitude towards HR. if u really think HR is just for paying salaries and recruitment, then please dont read further.I would reccomend that you read Human resource champions by Dave ulrich And i hope that one day you would realise that HR is much much much more than just salary and recruitment. so much more that, now such stuff is outsourced in most companies and is no longer taken care of by corporate hr
***When they asked you how you going to put that to management it is very much genuine question . Have you realised, did you realise how. You are doing summer internship, you have not even faced situation when HR Heads need to sit with other department heads.***
It is indeed a genuine question and i completely understand it. but if the company culture is such that there is so much of lack in trust in HR, that more than half of the time HR has is spent in explaining stuff to people, why they should be adopting it,if the first thing that comes in the mind of HR is how on earth are we going to explain this to people then i have serious doubts on credibility of HR in that company. It means that there is an inherent lack of trust in HR. when the company comes out with its quarterly results, if all the managers of the company ask the finance department show us the proof, give us the break up etc and if half of the finance teams time goes in explaining that to people, then i am sure you would understand the amount of loss of efficiency in that department
***Complaining is very easy , but fining solution is very difficult.**
true.. but the point is there should be a culture that tries to find solutions instead of mopping the dust under the carpet. that makes the entire diffrance
**If you want to learn be in that company only. There is always some thing to learn in every orgainzation .**
No, i will not be in that company.. even my seniors from earlier batches advised me against the company
**You must find the opportunity . No one will come and give you**
true.. this is something that i have learnt very early in life
This post is by no means to be rude. Its just to clarify my intentions. and i still stand by my point. Where you start your career makes a huge differance. and to any HR aspirant reading this post, please research your interests, the comapnies and the companies wrk culture before making a jump. It will make a huge differance.
Thanks :D

Hi Anup,
I completely agree with what you have said about HR. People who still think that HR is just a supporting function are not aware of the fact that HR has taken a shift from just being a support function to an equivalent business partner today.. It was really shocking the way someone has mentioned the functioning of HR (recruitments & salary).
HR builds the culture of a company, its the face of any organization. It prepares the company for the change, identifies the cultural characteristics that the firm should reduce or eliminate if it is to optimize competitive advantage, defines the required culture, including the specific behavior and technical knowledge & skill, which the organization requires to create to support the sources of competitive advantage...
I can go on and on at the role of strategic HR in an organization.. but trust me, you will come across such people in almost every organization, who will not skip any chance to critice the HR function.. but its not their fault.. its us who perhaps have still not succeeded in showing them the power of HR.
But I agree to the fact that we learn something or the other from even the worst experience of our life, whether its professional or personal.. and hence i'm sure that even you would have learnt something or the other being in this company (may be u learnt how to deal with such people).
Heres wishing you all the very best!!
God bless.. :)
