"Why hr ?" A good question to ponder over. I am in HR because, I like working with people, I am enthusiastic and optimistic, I am creative and spontaneous, I like coaching and counseling.

Dear Truth-Seeker,
Of all the resources used by any entrepreneur or business person like land, funds, machinery, equipment, technology, systems, strategies, plans, etc., the "Human Resource," as it is commonly yet erroneously labeled, is one unique resource that always appreciates, whereas all remaining resources "depreciate."
At the end of the day, not strategies but people give/get results. HR actually comprises of/is "energy" and "intelligence," nothing less. As such, the HR Management & Development Department/Group/Unit/Section or Force is a necessity to appreciate the perpetuating value of the HR (energy & intelligence), which, if deftly used, abounds with astonishing results/outcome.
Having stated the truth, I have to accept scathing, at times negative criticism from some quarters once in a while for a few of us HR practitioners for undeniable lack of or lukewarm commitment to our own profession, our compassion, our underperformance, our inability to connect with and accept other human beings as distinct as they are.
In any case, our professional friends do not need any justification for our useful, usable existence, while others would not accept any justification, however convincing. So, serving the organization and all its stakeholders earnestly.

The question to the interviewee is why did you choose HR and not what is the importance of HR. Your reply is more for the latter than the former.
As far as depreciation of assets is concerned, human resources also depreciate. Otherwise, the concept of retirement would not have been there.
Your argument that humans bring creative and intelligent solutions to stay competitive is absolutely valid. Nevertheless, the other side of the argument is that it is humans that deprive value from other humans. When managers demotivate juniors directly or indirectly, they reduce the value of other humans. This does not happen in the case of other assets.
For Asima: You have worked in a real estate company as an operations manager. Therefore, you understand the intricacies of operations better. You can utilize this knowledge in recruitment, training, and other employee development activities. You have an edge over other HR professionals. Your weakness could be that you may not know the "personnel" side of HR, i.e., knowledge of labor laws. You can supplement it with hardcore operations knowledge.
