It would not be advisable to conduct competency mapping without studying the industry you are in. Based on that research, shortlist and select the competencies most suitable for the industry and that would align with your company. Proceed with the mapping work based on this information. Otherwise, it would be a wasteful and time-consuming exercise that would not yield any benefits.

Competency Mapping is creating a rocket science of a pocket science and common sense principles. It has always been practiced for ages, but today, a big fuss is being made.
Another view is that it is redundant. If competencies could be so easily replicated, we would have a million Michelangelos and Mozarts, etc. Nature has its own secrets, and talent is a mysterious factor for each to dig deep within oneself and discover.
