I stepped into a team leader role recently. My previous role was completely on the technical side where I was responsible for providing solutions to critical issues in projects. However, my new role demands interacting with team members, planning tasks, monitoring them, and controlling them if necessary. I see everyone is different from others, and their attitudes towards work vary. I am struggling to find the right phrases and words to express their behavior, both good and bad. I hope someone could help me out to become familiar with the common negative traits team members have and how to handle them as a leader, while also knowing how to motivate them when things turn positive.

I find common work-related conversations, with real-time use case examples, would be helpful for me as I come from an engineering background. I have not studied people's behavior and understand it is an art. I need guidance to excel in giving feedback on team members' behavior to meet project goals.

Some questions are on my mind:

- What are the different personalities one could possess?
- How can one handle people with different skills and traits?
- I want to be prepared for any situation that may arise during project execution. I do not want to be at a loss for words to express my thoughts.

Any interesting blogs with live examples of project handling would greatly assist me.

Please guide me here.

My second query is: how can I communicate instantly in group meetings where my peers and boss are present? I am proficient in writing, but when it comes to speaking spontaneously, I fall short of words. How can I overcome this challenge?

Please provide your valuable suggestions and tips that I can incorporate into my work.

Dear friend,

At some point in our careers, we may need to transition from an individual role to a team leader's role. As we progress, managing people becomes essential. Ideally, we should have prepared ourselves for this future role well in advance. However, even at this stage, it is beneficial to read books on the following subjects:

a) Communication skills

b) Listening skills

c) Questioning skills

d) Conflict handling skills

e) Interpersonal skills

f) Team building skills

After reading books on the above topics, it is crucial to actively develop these skills within ourselves. Merely reading books and familiarizing ourselves with the subjects should not be the end goal. Additionally, at this point, imitation can also be valuable. Therefore, recalling how our manager or a team leader handled people-related issues and documenting those instances is essential. When reading these books, try to connect these instances with the theories discussed in the book. This practice will aid in analyzing and understanding whether the particular issue was professionally managed.

Furthermore, proficiency in language is crucial. Hence, mastering business writing skills is recommended. The way you have composed your post indicates room for improvement. Recognizing when to be formal and when to be informal is vital. Those who fail to distinguish between the two often struggle at the managerial level.

Please remember that managing people who report to you requires more than just learning common phrases. It demands a lot more effort.

All the best!

Dear friend,

You are not alone in feeling this way; there are millions who struggle to speak, express themselves, or convey their thoughts effectively when interacting with people, particularly with the educated. There are ways to enhance your interpersonal interactions, and I would like to suggest a few:

1) Enhance your vocabulary by memorizing key words, phrases, and idioms that are commonly used and needed frequently.

2) Watch English news and closely observe the style, body language, and presentation of the anchors on screen.

3) Practice reading news columns aloud in front of a full-length mirror with correct pronunciation and punctuation. This exercise can be beneficial before group discussions or presentations. Use suitable materials as prompts.

4) Maintain English as the primary language in conversations with your colleagues and even at home.

5) Consider offering free tuition classes to school and college students. Teaching others not only benefits them but also enhances your English speaking skills.

While these suggestions may not be new to you, I hope they serve as a helpful reminder.

I would be delighted if my recommendations prove useful to you. Best of luck.
