I am working as an HR Executive in a newly established firm. I have received an offer from an MNC company for an HR role in its backend operations. Kindly advise me on whether it is good to work in HR backend operations or if I should continue with my current job. Please provide me with an overview of the career opportunities in backend HR operations and whether it will be beneficial for my future growth.
Dear Harish,
Please share the job description of your new job and the existing one.
Often, the name given to a role can be quite mundane, whereas the accountabilities can be diametrically opposite.
Here are my suggestions for you to consider when weighing the two opportunities:
- Compare the day-to-day responsibilities. Evaluate the tasks you need to complete daily in both roles.
- Examine the reporting structure. Consider whether you report to a senior or the head of the firm in your current role. How does this contribute to your learning? Is there a lot of micromanagement, or do you have the autonomy to make decisions?
- Understand how information flows in your new job compared to your current one.
- Consider the work environment.
- Have they presented you with a growth plan? How has the person who previously held your role progressed within the new firm?
- Is there an employee alumni network at the new firm? Connect with them to learn where people from that firm have been hired.
- A new firm offers growth potential alongside its business cycle, whereas an established MNC may have more rigid job functions. While this may provide stability, it can become limiting without job rotation in the long term.
- What are your aspirations for the next three years, and how can each of these roles help you achieve them?
I look forward to hearing from you!

New established firm:
ADVANTAGES
You can get a full view and work on all components of the HR job. Things will be set up for HR systems in front of you, giving experience of the greatest importance.
DISADVANTAGES
Pay may be lower. A structured work environment may not be there initially. The career path may not be clear in the initial years until everything settles down on the business front. While working in an MNC has prestige, higher pay and perks in most cases, a chalked-out growth path, existing work patterns, etc. The disadvantage is that exposure to all aspects of your work may not be easily forthcoming. You may get stuck on a set of jobs for longer periods. For progressing/learning in HR, working in back-end operations is also necessary. So being in the backend by itself should not be a disqualifying proposition by itself. If you have faith that the new firm will continue to grow and job stability is not an issue, then work in a new setup for all-round learning experiences.
