Dear Mr Rajesh Kumar Srivastava,

Please refer our telephonic discussion that we had on your above post. The traditional method of manpower planning would cover:

a) Primary manpower required to operate ___ number of machines per shift

b) Supporting manpower required to operate ___ number of machines per shift

c) Manpower required for the maintenance of the machine

d) Manpower for the general maintenance

e) Manpower for the non-core functions in the operations department

f) Manpower required for operating supporting departments like Purchase, HR, Security, Accounts etc.

g) Standby manpower required for each department (to take care of planned or unplanned absence)

However, there could be flaw in the above manpower planning. If you do the manpower planning based on the measures of performance, it will give you the accurate requirement. Examples of what happens if the manpower planning is not based on the Performance Management System (PMS) have been told to you in the telephonic discussion.

I strongly recommend you designing the measures of performance and then going ahead with the operations. You should do this for all the departments and not for the operations alone. If you require any consulting services to establish PMS, then you may approach me. To know more about my consulting services in PMS, you may click the link in my signature column.

Thanks,
