I am working as an HR Executive with a small firm of about 40 employees in Thane. We are currently planning to outsource our payroll and documentation process. Kindly suggest if it is advisable for a small firm to outsource their payroll process.

For 40 employees, it's not advisable to outsource the payroll process. You only need to work three days in a month if you have maintained all the attendance and leaves properly. All you need is a Payroll Software (Excel also works well). You can call me for suggestions and ideas.

Payroll processing is more than an Excel sheet of formulas. (Wish life was so simple!) I think it also depends on the nitty-gritty of components and the benefits offered to your employees. Well, I would suggest keeping it internal since the confidentiality of critical data is involved with additional cost.
