Dear Rashmi,
Please refer to the national festivals and holidays act of your state. You need to follow the provisions of this act.
Roughly speaking, if the employees work on the holiday declared by the company, then they are required to be double wages. If they work on 26th Jan or 15th Aug or 2nd Oct, then they need to be paid with triple wages. These are the general rules. However, as stated earlier, please refer to the act applicable to your state.
Thanks,

Dear member,
In general public holidays are declared by the Govt. to be observed in their respective public offices while in your case, your company must be covered under either of the Acts i.e. either state S&E Act or Factories Act. Now after finalization the applicability of the Act under which you are covered then go through the applicable provision relating to grant of national & festival holidays in that particular Act.
Submitted plz.

Dear CiteHR Member Ms Rashmi Kukade,
It is not clear from your question as to whether your company comes under ESMA 1981. You have also not indicated the name of State in which your company is located.
However the position has been amply clarified by the senior experts. There are three types of holidays i.e. National Holiday, Public Holidays and holidays declared by a company by its own management. Public Holidays are declared by concerned State and it is mandatory to allow such holidays, however if employees are directed to attend to work then compensatory remuneration, as mentioned above, has to be paid i.e. double or tiple of the average daily pay/wages. A company can declare additional holiday as may be decided by its management on any particular occasion.
Hope this further clears and answers your query.

It is not mandatory for private companies to declare all public holidays, as announced by the State Government/Central Government.
As rightly pointed out by our learned member, the poster has not indicated any details such as, which State, her company belongs to and/or whether it is factory or Head office or branch office etc.
