Dear Anil,
What your boss has told is to do "Management by Walking Around". Though this concept is applicable more to senior management personnel, you may also take cue from it and implement the concept. Google it and you will get lot of articles on the subject.
All the best!

Dear Anil,
Employee engagement is a very vast process and on going. To start with I would suggest talking to people on shop floor, creating feedback kiosk on workplace, If you have canteen at work place see how happy are your employees with the food.

Dear Anil, Good Morning to you. The HR and Admin jobs are not very intriguing but very intriguing if you don't follow very simple rules in day-to-day working life. A few tips which may suit you are:

(a) Go to your Office at least 15 minutes in advance check all the premises and all the access control and security related gadgets and ensure they are functioning properly. If any gadget is not functioning then it will be your responsibility to get is on road immediately. In the evening also when you have to leave your office spend at least 15 minutes in and around your office or company premises and find out if there are any issues which need your attendance.

(b) Learn to remember and recognize all the employees and who are reporting for work and wish them good morning or good evening depending upon time. Mix up with all the employees irrespective of rank and structure and get their mind to know for your self.

(c) Employee Engagement is basically what I am writing about. You have to get to know each employee and keep mixing with them on regular basis.

(d) Update each employees dossier and learn about each employees and interact with each one of them from time to time to keep abreast with them.

More next time.

Employee engagement is the level of commitment and involvement an employee has towards their organization and its values. An engaged employee is aware of business context, and works with colleagues to improve performance within the job for the benefit of the organization.

for a ER Manager it is very important first to develop a image of wellwisher in the eyes of the employees and feeling of trust that this ER manager is always there for them...,its a slow proccess and is it take time to develop...meet your emplioyees regularlty ,share thouight and ideas with them ,plan some activities so that they start enjoying their work and workplace, understand why they are not geting comfortable with the values and belief of the organnsation ,what you can do to motivate and inspire him to get engagaed ...grievence handling understand their problem and taking up the issues with the concerned authority and solving it ..develop and conduct some traning and motivation secceions, paln some activities invole employees with you...

use respect ,reward and recogination for positive result...
