Please explain me the leaves. How many leaves an employee can take in 1 year?
what about Optional Leave, paid leave, non paid leave. what is process of leave sanctioned?

Hi Barkha !
Leave policy varies from organisation to organisation and it depends on the type, size, & few other factors of the organisation.
Though there are few basic statutory guidelines for paid leaves for all registered/Pvt. Ltd. & Ltd. companies under various acts.
Please let us know what exactly is the type, size (Manpower & turnover wise) and line of business of your company, so that exactly some suitable leave policy could be shared with you.
There is a very Good Leave Record Maintenance Excel Sheet which has been posted recently (Last month) by another CiteHR member (Deepu) who is also a Sr. Exec. in our Company at Gurgaon. I would request you to find out that thread (by using Quick Search) and go through that thread & download that Excel sheet also. There could be other valuable inputs also available if you are able to search the appropriate directory.
Broadly categorising there could be following types of Leaves in any organisation :-
1. EL/PL = Earn Leave / Paid Leave (which can be accumulated within the limits defined in the Company policy & carried forward ) If the employee resigns or Superannuates this type of balance leave is encashed to the employee. Generally many companies give 30 days PL per annum, but it can be availed only if the employee has worked for at least a month (@2.5 days per month's attendace). This type of Leave must be granted with prior approval of the appropriate sanctioning authority or Deptt. Head and should be processed thru HR deptt. only so that the Leave record of each employee can be maintained and updated.
2. CL - Casual Leave (Generally companies give only 7 or 10 days per annum depending on the co. policy) CL may be availed by any employee for sudden Leave requirement but should be generally limited to not more than 2 days in a stretch as this may also be availed without prior written approval also if a sudden need is there, though every employee is supposed to inform by any means about their sudden absence otherwise the HR has the authority to mark absent for all uninformed Leave.
3. SL - Sick Leave (Sick Leave also is generally 10 days in many companies) This type of leave is exclusively and strictly meant for availing only when the person is sick. The employee is expected to inform the company of their sickness and if it is more than 2 days at a stretch, then the person must provide the fitness Certificate/ or Doctor's Presciption for his rejoining.
This is just to make you aware of the outline of major Leave provisions in any company. There are other few matters such as LTC linking to EL/PL etc. also which should be understood if it is applicable in your organisation.

I want to add something to it.
EL which is the earned leave is for the next calender year. For example if a person joins a company in Jan 2007, he will be entitled for earned leave in Jan 2008. This leave is called earned leave because you earn that leave after working for sometime.
