Hello to everyone, I just want to know that HR is really a good option as a career. I found that even in a well-settled company, they want a max of 10 HR as an employee. Students who are pursuing their MBA in HR or done with HR find themself in consultancy rather than the company. In a class of 60 hardly 4-5 get placement in a company, even from well-known Universities or institutes. 90% want to go to the Company. I think, there is a cut-throat competition in HR more than anything else.

Hi,
Every function has its own plus & minus but getting into one function is purely depending on ones own interest & guts. I do agree that supply is little higher than the demand in the market for HR but the opportunities for HR in market are also becoming huge and plenty in different forms.
Now all the companies start realizing the impacts / effects of HR function and turn to give special place for HR function in the system. The importance of Human resources in today's corporate world is significantly going up & up & up.
Below are few opportunities for HR prevailing in the market .
1. HR recruiter
2. Executive - Training & development
3. Executive - PMS
4. Executive - Compensation & Benefits
5. Executive - Time Office
6. Executive - Payroll
7. Executive - Employee Engagement
8. Executive - OD
9. HR Generalist
10. Sales HR
11. Plant HR
12. Executive - People Services
13. Executive - IR or ER
14. Counseling & Grievances Management
15. Executive - Welfare
16. HR / People consultant
17. Executive - HR strategy & Policy formulation
18. Executive - CSR & Institution - Industry interface
19. Trainer / Counselor
20. Talent Acquisition executive / Manager
21. Consultant - Legal compliance / liaise etc
Studying about HR does not mean that you should work only for other Company. You can also think of starting your won business and start being as your own boss. The insights obtained in HR during your college days will definitely be useful when you start your own HR related businesses like Manpower Recruitment Consultancies, HR Training & Other services, OD consultation, Compensation & Benefits Management, Employee Engagement Consultant etc.
But of course, theoretical knowledge alone cant help you come up better in your business. But Today, there are so many HR consultancies across the world which generate lots & lots of job opportunities for freshers. These small size consultancies or Companies generate better platform for freshers to work & gain required knowledge/ insights in HR which will help them to think of starting their own business in future or getting into reputed organization later.
Freshers / Executives in entry level normally expect much more in the beginning stage and they forget to think that they must equip themselves before demanding / expecting big. They are also not considering HR consultancies / small scale companies for their employment as they have wrong impression in mind that they can not come up in HR profession if they work in these kind of consultancies / units which basically wrong. In fact, it would be a stepping stone for success in HR profession.
They come out from colleges with lots & lots of expectations / dreams from/about HR and they study only about big companies or HR professionals work in reputed organizations. So when they will not be able to get an opportunity in their dream company with their dream designation, they get disappointed and start spreading wrong message to the whole world (to their juniors / young learning executives, students etc) that opportunities in HR is less.
According to me, opportunities are plenty in the market for HR for the people who are able develop their employability skills.

Hi All,
HR is all about experience, as you tend to deal with human physiology. People who want to see a brighter career in HR have to be patient in the initial stage & gain the experience (at least for 5 Years) after which you can expect a boo in your career may be it any stream.
Like one of our friend has given Example of 3 idiots movie, here a dialogue states " Knowledge is coming out in various ways gain as much as you can".

well its an interesting field and has alot of opportunities, its all about been given the opportunity and exposure to learn on the job, making mistakes and correcting them is the surest way to gain practical experience in the field of HR. One most interesting point is that most traditional organisations are now beginning to understand the need for HR's role hence the effort in seperating corporate administration from HR especially in government and state owned institutions, the future is bright...!!!

Hi,
As you pointed "they want max 10 HR", do you know why.
Today there are many automated software tools which can efficiently handle the repetitive HR work such as creating salary slip, invoices etc once the data is entered in to the system so couple of HRs can manage thousands of employees.
To create a place for your self in such environment the academic knowledge is not sufficient.
So you should
1. learn real time challenges which HR faces despite of having automated HR processes
2. learn how to manage/handle some of the HR software application
3. learn how to add value to such environment by improving your soft skills
4. Lear about human psychology and law (such as labor laws, legal complications and their implications)
Just with plain old academics it is very difficult to grow in a competitive era.
Another fact is only bigger companies are able to purchase and maintain the software because they are quite costly so there are high chance to get absorbed in small companies. Once you get carrier break then it is up to you how you can nourish it.
Thanks

The way you have started exploring things using Cite Hr and so on.. this is the way you can actually learn & understand the way current HR world is working. Usually all the companies sat the HR Department is Support function as its non productive, so every time being in HR you have to justify the cost you are incurring to the companies which is logical, and most of us think that market is not stable, who doesn't want to make profit? In the same ways the companies will also think about this and they term it as cost cutting.
However till you are able to justify the work and your importance to your organization your job will always be safe &you will keep growing...
All the best..Folks please share your view on this...

Hi,
I totally agree with you. Except recruitment there are less opportunities for people who wish to make their career in HR. It's specifically applicable when you have prior Admin experience. My active search is going on for opportunity in Pune but unfortunately was not able to find good openings in MNC's. This is not to demotivate you but to give you clear idea of current market position.
Appreciate your point and All the best for your career.

It was there, even after so many years of the arrival of the internet and the advent of mobiles, we hardly went to the telegraph offices, because things were available in our finger tips. HR folks can take this as a "warning bell" and take steps to equip themselves to face the future and that too as "(heart)specialists." We need to keep pace with changing times, understand the business we prevail in, the overall market conditions the environment and gear ourselves for the challenges ahead.
Energy, Environment, Education, and Entertainment are predictably the futures of tomorrow and fortunately our country will have tons of openings
