Long working hours is beneficiary to org. or creates stress, more politics etc??
I am in a company where 10 hours is the minimum working hour to all officers in a day. I have seen people were gossiping in the last hour or two & waiting for the completion of 10 hour.
As per my observation most of the topic is related to back biting towards other which results unhealthy enviornment of the org.
please provide me the best solution for that...

According to me, reduce the work hours and create busy-atmosphere by making the project-manager assign work that would be making employees not-to-afford gossip time, etc.

Why compulsorily 10 hrs ? If u have work and exigencies of business then working beyond normal working hrs is ok. But just to spend the fixed hours without sufficient work is bound to lead routine gossiping within the office premises paves the way for character assassination is out and out bad thing and spoils professional ethics. This is also a bad HR policy.

Hi
As per Factories Act and Shops and Establishment Act, the employee must work regular duties not more than 9 Hrs with a one Hr of break in between and not more than 48 Hrs in a week with 1 day rest.
Your employer is illegal in making his employees to work for 10 days in a day. You can show your employer the above Acts and make them under stand that, to make a employee work for more than 9 Hrs continuously, they got to make Over time Payment for the extra Hrs worked by the employee, double the wages for the time extra worked by the employee.
More over we are human being, for every successive Hr of work our efficiency depreciates, the out come become nearly nill at the end Hrs. So why any Over time of work, what the employer gain by retaining the employee more than 9 Hrs of duty, it is only to show the bossism and nothing else.

A person who works for longer hours is not necessarily an efficient worker. Nowadays it has become fashion to work for longer hours in a private organization to earn boss's appreciation.Private organizations are headed by people who are very rich and travel by luxurious cars. They do not face any hassles while traveling. They consider their office as second home and are least concerned about employees family life.In a city like Mumbai people spend more than 2 hours commuting (by local transport i.e. by bus and overcrowded trains).Owners of private organizations never use local transport for commuting so it is very obvious they will never understand the trouble which the employees go through every day.
If they are made to work for longer works they will naturally get frustrated and the productivity will decline.Home is not mean only to have dinner at night and sleep. There is something called as personal and private life (family responsibilities etc) which the owners of such organizations will never understand because for them money is the only thing. If you value every minute of 8hrs or 8.5hrs (normal working hours) and concentrate you will realize that work gets finished on time. Only in very exceptional cases you will find work stretching beyond normal working hours. If the work load is more say if 5 people are doing the work of 10 people it is advisable to recruit additional 5 people. Yes it will add cost (salary cost) to the company but at least the efficiency of people will improve and the company will benefit in the long run.(I mean the cost will be offset by high productivity).
People often criticize govt office employees as lazy but not all are lazy. One has to understand that the volume of work handled by them is much much higher than private offices. The volume of work is divided among large number of employees. (Govt employee strength is always higher than private employee). This is the main reason they work for stipulated working hours and leave office on time and they are also paid overtime wages in case of work exceeding beyond normal working hours.Their working conditions are decided by govt and they have unions to address their issues.
I have observed that in private organizations (not all) many employees waste time by chatting with colleagues, visiting social networking sites etc. This consumes more than hour. And when it is time to leave the office they realise that their work is incomplete and they sit late in the office. In some private companies you have to take permission of your boss before leaving office on time.If you work religiously and do constant followups and reporting work can get completed on time.Bosses have to understand that a person who works efficiently and produce results in quick time is much much better than person who stretches himself beyond working hours to complete work. This is the main reason why efficient people leave such companies because they are made to work like slaves even when they complete work on time. What is the use of earning money when you cant spend time with your family. To keep them happy you are working right?? How will they remain happy if you are coming home late and not spending enough time with them.

In my above discussion I am not criticizing all private companies but it is true that majority of them do exploit employees by making them work longer hours and pay peanuts in comparison. We are HR professionals, H for Human. We have to understand that humans run companies not machine and money alone.
