Dear New HR,
There have been a few very good responses to your post with special mention to Mr. Dinesh, Mr. Arun Chitlangia, and Mr. Shaik Abdul Khadir.
However, I have a suggestion that you should not isolate the employee. Giving him special attention may not work that well and can drive him nuts, thereby pushing him more into his shell. You can organize Personality Development training for a group of employees and nominate him as well. This way, he can gain a better perspective on his own behavior and personal dynamics. There are plenty of such exercises; FIRO - B can be effective in helping this particular employee understand his behavior in comparison to others in the group. It will provide you with an option to discuss the pros and cons of each behavior and emphasize the importance of nurturing social skills, interpersonal skills, personal branding, etc., as suggested by Mr. Dinesh. My suggestion is to let him become aware of his behavioral shortcomings and abnormalities through comparative analysis, rather than having anyone else instill those feelings in him.
Afterwards, you can proceed with what Mr. Arun has suggested. You need to gain acceptance to build a comfort zone with him. Once he opens up, you can delve into the root cause of the issue.
However, you should have patience and ensure you are clear on the background information before approaching him, as pointed out by Mr. Shaik Abdul Khadir.
