in my present company we also have to work on every festivals. it is also a peak time for our company.
so what we do is we usually do half days on these festival days.
till 3 to 4pm we work regularly, then we celebrate the function of the festival which take 2 more hours then we leave from the office.
it makes full working day and employees also enjoys the day.
this is the way in my present company we do to make people happy as well as working on the festival days.

As u r a HR manager.........so you sholul try 2 convience them,,,,,,,,n try 2 create festive n friendly envt in the company............
u can give then a party on deewali night and can also invite their family members if they are localate,,,,,,,,,,n u should also give them some compensation.

I also agree with you all.
As management has made an announcement not to give holidays we should obey their order. Their must be something in their mind.
But as an HR you should take permission from management to celebrate th event with their families in company.
This will motivate the employees and their families

It is very clear your business directly deals with coustoemr and the festive seasons are the period which will fetch approximately 50% of revenue of the whole year. In such case closing show room is not practicable.
This is very clear that after Diwali say 27th October, 2008 Monday let the show room close for 28, 29 and 20th three days. OR Let group of employees go on holiday for three days while another group take care of business. Usually after festive season business will not have that much pressure.
Also, do not forget to insist on yuor management to meet the family of your staff in a gathering. The major compensation is monetary benefit for working on festive holidays besides OT and bonus. If you are able to convience your management You are the best HR Manager.

After reading all comments to this post I invited the attention of one senior cite HR member. He advised me as follows:
Management if ask employee to attend work on declared holidays liable to pay employee following compensation:
1. Remuneration for the work of day actual worked.
2. One day extra remuneration for the hardship of working on festival or national holidays.
3. Compensating one day wages for his holiday entitlement.
If management avoid payment for compensating one day wages for holiday employee worked and entitled, employer has to then allow employee to avail compensatory holiday with pay in lieu of such holiday.
This is called 1day wages +2day extra wages.
This is neither charity or nor a creative idea but a law for working on holidays.

I am working in Shamshabad Airport - Hyderabad as HR Manager for a ground handling company. Our emp's work on shift, in our holiday calendar we have 3 National holidays and 12 public holidays.
Staff who worked on National holidays will be entitled for OT allowance + compensating with comp off.
Staff who worked on public holidays will be compensating with comp off.

As per Shop & Establishment Act and Factory Act 1948, It is mandatory to give National Holiday to the employee but Employer has liberty to compensate Deepawali Festival to other Day. If you are not compensated then being a HR - Manager of the Firm you have to sagest to the Management.

Also let us know what was the practice in earlier year. is diwali holiday was given in earlier year and only this year is an exception? If so then convince the employees and give them off on some other day.
