I do agree that being administration you can not satisfy every one at all the times. Can anyone imagine about the situation where all the members of an organisation, society, family are satisfied with each other. It is my opinion that if as administration you are able to fulfill the basic necessity / requirement of 80-85% members of the organization / society then you are discharging your duties effectively. I had worked in Indian Air Force in the capacity of general administration dealing with personnel and after retirement in export houses as HR and presently as manager administration. It is general nature of human beings that they forget your all good jobs on the day when you are unable to fulfill their requirements due to any hindrances.

Never take any job thankless be it a housekeeper, cook, peon or any senior staff. All are important to run the show and have their own value in the organisation.

To try just switch off your canteen / panty or house keeping department for a day and evaluate the importance at the end of the day. Importance will automatically appeared.

Dear All,
It is very good to read your thoughts. Few of have said before me also that previously it was only one entity PERSONNEL and now it has fragmented like HR, IR & Admin. But the work remains the same in small industry. Only big MNC's are keeping separate person for separate work of HR, IR & Admin. After completing more than 18 years of doing all these activities, It doesn't matter in which fragment are u. Because you can handle all these 3 branches well. I have handled all these 3 branches well and still doing the same.
My opinion is initially if a person wants to go for this department should handle all these 3 wings. After getting into it, he will get the idea and experience in which field he has to progress.

Dear all,

I have been following the dsicussion with great interest. I am a HR generalist handling Admin functions such as canteen, transportation etc. What i have noticed is that, clubbing both these fuctions can sometimes put you in difficulties. As such "Admin" is a very "employee friendly" role where in you support your employees and expect similar support from them as well. But as a HR Professional there are times when you have to take a hard stance while enforcing discipline and the like. For example, when there is some unavoidable issue and as a result of which if either cantten or transport facilites are affected, as Admin person in charge of that area, you would request your employees to kindly adjust as the default is due to some uncontrollable issue. The employees might also oblige. But after some time when you tranform into the HR avatar and start taking stances to enforce discipline etc, the same employees feel antagonized and make it a point to give you trouble when you don the admin role and request their support in some other issue. Hence I feel that HR and Admin should be separate just as welfare and discipline should be separate.

Thank u all for your valuable inputs. I was expecting a quality discussion on this topic and it happened. No job in this world is a thankless job. I respect all professions because they all contribute to the society. But you can't be expert in everything right? If a person wants to become a Administrator it is fine but a person who has completed MBA in HR will always look for HR profile and I feel there is nothing wrong in it. It is a matter of choice. Times have changed now we should not follow something which has happened over the years. HR and Admin should not be clubbed together otherwise both will lose respect and their identification. In small companies I know it is not feasible to have two separate departments because they can't afford to do it. If a HR fresher joins a small company he has to handle both HR and Admin but after gaining experience he will also eventually look for big companies or MNC for HR profile only.

Well, as you mentioned that company's club the role of HR and admin, it is true for the small or medium size of business but when you look at the large business or organizations, not only the HR dept has divided in to some small function specific tasks but also, Admin dept. So, I can say, it depends on the size and also on the management of the company as how they want to run their business.
As you asked about going for an HR or Admin role as you know about the roles and responsibilities of both functions then it is upto your choice as well as in which role you find yourself more confident and serve better.

HR & Admin are different ball game altogether and they should not be mixed. If you talk about Human Resource Function as a whole then HR,ER,& Admin becomes an intregal part of it ,all having different flavours ,complexcities & learning. It is upto an individual to judge which career he will opt as per his acumen & learning. It is unfair to pit one against another as all are cruicial areas for any organization.Moreever to to get to the top of the ladder one must have reasonable exposure in all the three areas of HR function.Reason why we call a Function Head - HR,ER&Admin.

Dear All,
we should think about what is MBA first, MBA is Master of Business Administration- in it all other streams come in like HR, Finance, Marketing.
MBA HR comprises HR and ADMIN both.
HR is Administration of Human Resources
ADMIN is Administration of Facilities and general resource.
some times functions of HR and Admin differ substantially but sometimes some miscellaneous tasks come in and these tasks can not be classified as either HR or Admin.
It is up to us which profession we want to chose. If you like HR prominently then go for HR only but never let any opportunity to go since it includes admin work because sometimes HR has to interfere in Admin activities also.
e.g. canteen is Admin people's responsibility but, if problem arises and workers make issue then it will fall in IR, HR will also come in picture since HR has to take care of People and also looks after discipline ( if employees are not observing rules in canteen).

Dear All very good topic for discussion.
How you can utilize human resource without knowing how to administrate them? Administration of company is noting but administration of human, material (chairs), welfares of employee (canteen, cleanness, pick-up and drop etc) where the HR can stand out from Administration team.
Every one wants to become head of the department of their own functional areas , if not capable to take additional role which is relative with our functional area then how can we achieve the Goal in this competition world ?
Thanks and Regards
