Dear Seniors
I am working in a small IT firm as HR professional. I recently conducted One to One discussion with employees based on my discussion i shared the details of discussion with my company owner(CEO), as there were certain things with which employees were not satisfied i shared that also so that we could improve on and provide better environment to work. But my CEO reacted on that asked me to stop all further HR activities for now till he will not instruct. Also he mentioned in that mail that he will find some other way to get the work done. Please suggest what i could i do in this situation? Is that wrong to share the feedback which i received from employees?

Dear sakshi,
At the outset Heartly Congratulations for your efforts to reach to people.
But at the same time I want to Warn to " Walk before you run "
Try to get more & more feedback from people that will help you understand the company atmosphere in More Clearer Way.
Please pass the feedback to management in phase wise so that management will get some time to think over the problem.
While taking feedback from people please make sure you don't utter single word against management as well as make sure that "You" don't Commit any specific action / immediate specific step to improve the situation ; but assure them you are going to take " Necessary Steps to improve the situation "
In the meantime try to understand " What is the intentation of your CEO " to stop you?

Dear Prashant & Pon
Thanks for your reply.
I will try my best to provide a positive work environment to the employees but the problem is the CEO never gets satisfied with anyone and any activity even when every one is trying to put their best efforts. Is their any way by which we could remove such mind blocks from his mind as this is leading to negativity & demotivation in the employees.

Hi,

I can empathise with you. Many a times people jump into becoming entrepreneurs just because they have a good idea, they have good network, they have lots of money.

Quite a lot of them unfortunately fail to understand the importance of people working for them. I know of a company that I worked for a decade back. Today it is a listed company. But I know for sure nothing much has changed otherwise in the company. The CEO & COO are autocratic.

However farsighted, however noble and genuine your feedback / suggestions could be to your CEO, I have little faith that he will ever listen to you. It has nothing to do with you. But a lot to do with this individual.

My advise to many of my friends (at least 4 of them) under such circumstances has been know which fight to pick up and which one to drop, even in the first instance.

The world is too large. Look out for a place where HR is respected. Of course issues and challenges will still be there - but there will not be a need for you to sell yourself, in the first instance, to your own management.

All the best!

Dear Chandru
Thanks for your reply.
I joined this organization just 6 months back and established whole HR set up but now such behavior is somehow creating a negativity in my mind too.
Shall i plan to look out at some other place where Human resource is respected?
Seeking your valuable suggestions.

There is nothing wrong to providing feedback but to share and I agree with Prashant and you must use some methods to provide feedback to your Management so that you can avoid this kind of issues… Instead of sharing something with superior or senior, you need to be more tactful or professional.

Well tell me something…are you the senior one in your HR department, or to whom you are reporting there? If you are the senior one of your department you need to use some methods to provide Employees feedback to your Management easily and by doing this you can show your interest in making your company/organization’s atmosphere and working condition good. You can use methods of information Gathering by employee survey. Offering general feedback opportunities are important — open-office policies or meeting with managers — but specific targeting of issues can help guide your company through difficult times.

Also you need to visit this weblink 8 Reasons Why Employee Feedback Backfires and im sure this will help you in your this job

One more thing, you just need to do your job and don’t let other take advantage of doing or saying anything..of you wanna do make changes in your Organization, but for this first you need support of your other colleagues and seniors. When you will be able to convince your other seniors and colleagues and they will support you, your CEO will automatically understand the needs and required changes and your effort ofcourse in this regards but till then you don’t need to be the sore of his eyes…

Hope you got my point..

Best of Luck

Dear Anil
Thanks for your valuable suggestion and sharing.
I am the only HR person as its a small organization(20 members as of now) we are in expansion and that is the reason HR been implemented recently. I am reporting directly to the owner(CEO) of the organization.
I shared the feedback in a positive manner but the problem is he believes that all others are wrong that is the main reason i believe that he took the feedback in a personal manner instead of taking it in professional way.
Well thanks for the feedback i will try my best to get the situation and work environment smoother.

  • Other members have given you very valuable inputs. I also have few inputs from different perspective.
  • It seems to me that your CEO is upset because you have done something without his knowledge and something which he never wanted you to do. His perception must be that, by taking feedback from employees you have disturbed the working environment and unnecessarily raised the expectations of the employees.
  • Generally, Sr. Management and CEOs of small organizations are well aware of the environment and climate of the organization and they understand the pulse of employees and what they expect. They also get chance to interact and communicate with employees very often. Hence, CEO might have felt that, I know everything and what was a need for you to take feedback from employees.
  • Secondly, general feedback from employees is on expected lines, like they want more salary, More holidays and leaves, less working hours, more benefits and very soft, accommodative and lenient treatment from Management. In case majority feedback was on expected lines then obvious response will be 'I know what employees want, what was the need to rediscover what I already know and heighten the expectations of employees.
  • Why boss is not interested in listening to obvious feedback because he has no solution to offer. For example he very well knows, employee expects more salary but may be he is not in a position to offer higher salary due to financial constraints.
  • There is some amount of risk in taking feedback, i.e. by collecting feedback you are sending a message that, management is concerned about employees and wants to do something for them. This heightens the employee expectations, but in case you are not able to do anything with the feedback received then it creates lot of frustration and disappointment among employees.
  • Lastly, boss is always boss and he is always right, so whenever you wish to venture into such a sensitive things, keep him informed and do things with his knowledge and permission.

Dear Sir
Thanks for your feedback.
Activity was conducted only after seeking CEO's permission and we are already providing competent salary so no issues related to that. As per him the feedback provided is not correct. So he has reacted this way.
True boss is always right.
