Hi hr_87,

Its not a tough bridge to shift from HR consultancy to HR generalist profile. HR consultancy includes main responsibility of recruiting and filling positions ASAP. HR generalist profile is a big profile which includes almost each and every activity of HR field and no doubt HR field is as fast as ocean. Everyday you learn a new thing in this . As HR is related to human psychology somehow so it is challenging job. HR generalist profile holds recruitment as its one of important part but the key responsibilities are much more than in a consultancy. Basically HR generalist performs each and every responsibilities of HR field i.e from Day to day operations to big decisions related to growth of organization. Some of Key responsibilities of an HR generalist are as follows :-
1. Manpower planning and recruitment
2. Maintaining updated employee database.
3. Issue of each and every letter from joining to exit.
4. Induction , training and development of the employees.
5. Performance Management.
6. Employer-Employee relation which includes employee engagement activities and handling the employer- employee grievances, collective bargaining etc.
7. Making policy and assuring its disciplined implementation within the organization.
8. Employee counseling, employee safety welfare.
9. Holding each and every activity like compensation and benefit, leave management , full & final settlement.
10. Organization development
11. Compliance of all statutory laws like all labor laws and other acts applicable to different kind of organization.

This is not all, there are other KRAs which you can find out on the citehr. I hope this information will be helpful.

hmm that’s really good Ms Renuka very appreciating but there are some facts which we can’t ignore before talking on this HR Generalist Profile.

First, I wanna know something about you Mr./Ms. HR_87, about your qualification and other experience which is really important for this bcz just to work with a Consultancy, one can get indulge into HR and needs more basic HR skills and knowledge.

For example: A person who have no relevant experience and no direct concern, can work with HR Consultancy but cant obtain the HR basic and others skill to understand HR and HR Generalist Profile.

If you have basic HR education and working there but wanna continue your career as a HR professional, you have to acquire more HR skills by doing HR Course and need to get your HR knowledge and about their Functions strong which will enhance your skills.

At HR Generalist profile, one has to work with every function of HR. One needs to be updated himself/herself and have to play a very important and a bridge role for an Organisation. They are characterized by their involvement in -- and knowledge of -- a wide variety of functions and divisions within HR. In any typical day, the HR generalist may re-negotiate with a health benefits broker, determine if positions should be classified as exempt or non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act, open recruitment, answer questions about medical leave options and testify at an unemployment insurance hearing. The generalist is a jack-of-all-trades who can administer any aspect of HR.

First of all, Thanks Mr. Anil for the detailed and impressive elaboration.

Hr_87, As you mentioned that you are an MBA(HR). So, I think it may not be that difficult for you to shift from consultancy to generalist profile. But beside that thing , I would like to tell you, as explained earlier, Generalist is all about the hardcore HR.So ,first of all you will have to start as an Assistant HR executive/HR executive in a firm which may or may not be consultancy where you are supposed to perform not only recruitment but all those activities as mentioned above.
So you are to assure that it is an executive profile and not recruiter profile. It would be better option if you work for some time in guidance of someone that would give you practical knowledge of all the things.
There are many online and part time courses that give full practical training of Generalist profile, like Asiaweb media training or hrhouse and many more. You can go for that course which will give you good guidance. These courses are part time with batch system. You are just to attend classes for 2-3 hrs either daily for one month or every Sunday for 3-4 months depending upon the duration of the course. You can ask for further details on internet. These courses are specially designed for HR professionals and cover almost every area of HR.
