Dear Seniors,
I am a MBA HR, though my interest is only in HR , initially as i couldn't get into HR domain, and to gain work experience i started my career in operations and then later i moved to HR, as i moved from Operations , in next company i was offered initially only for a training and i was paid a stipend , my training period was over and as there was retrenchment i couldn't continue on permanent role with them , so again after my training i had to move out.. i have some gap of around few months after my operations experience as i took a break as my mother was not well..
And now again i have a gap of 4 months due to this retrenchment in company .. As i don't want to compromise on my career as i couldn't find the role which i am looking for i didn't join immediately after that retrenchment as i don't want to take up contract and of-roll as again in short period i have to look again for another job. so i don't want that to happen
My role in last company though it was training i handled responsibility as a regular HR i gained a good experience into recruitment and HR Operations, as i handled complete cycle of recruitment .
Recently in one company which i attended interview the role was good and even i performed well and also i got the feedback as i did well in interview but they said as i have gap in resume they would have to discuss and will get back and it has been quite sometime now still have not heard from them..
This is the issue i face , though i perform well in my technical and HR interviews due to my gap in resume and also i am close to marriage age they have second thoughts to hire me as i would leave sooner saying marriage as a reason...... but i don't want to marry immediately and i have also spoken to my family on that. My career is my priority . In this company they didn't ask me directly about my marriage plans so i didn't have a chance to tell them as i wont leave for my personal commitments and will work for long time . Though they didn't say directly the other reason , i can very well understand that these two can only be reasons as my interview status comes to hold in companies .
In this 4 months i was searching for job attended some interviews and also attended a short term training course in HR ( 1 week) and a workshop in HR as to have a learning , also I regularly read many articles .As i thought it wont be justifying to do some course just to fill the gap unless i am interested and helps in my job so i dint look for any course after that ...
Now I am looking for your advice and suggestions as how i can manage this situation better and what i can answer in my interviews ? and how i can move forward as i soon wanted to join in job.. Kindly give me a suggestion...
Thanking you in advance

Hi sandhya,
you are taking it in a wrong way and demotivating self without any reason. It's corporate and it happens and now a days jobs are not much in market. so one try to fill the opening with the best suitable talent and they get it on the same value as compared to you. so it effects somewhere in your hiring. gaps come in our carrier. sometimes we don't get the exact profile we are looking. but in your case it happens twice and your carrier period is also not so long. but you should not worry. I personally have faced this situation when i left my job after 8 months and moved on to Gurgaon and i struggled for next 5 months and i tried harder and harder but couldn't cracked the interview. Then i choosed a bil low profile co. which was growing stage and profile they offerd me good but salary which they offered was less then what i was getting in my last profile 5 months back. there i was as i accepted the offer because i wanted to back in my HR field and wanted to collect more exp.
So you should also search few profiles which actually should offer you a bit low and just pur yourself back in HR. If you'll try Recruitment profile you'll get it easily as you have exp. in that too. just brush your skills and don't give the damm shit to these things. speak truth and defend your self for that situation as whatever the reasons were there to take gap face it and convince them on that part. In Recruitment profile. communication skills, portal knowledge, social networking, calling ability, bulk hiring, target achiever, are few major points where they will ask questions. Also what type of hiring you have done in your last profile prepare on that. everything should be very clear in a way. Be ready for a less salary offer. learn the things again get HR exp back and this phase will be over soon. update your profile on job sites. search consultancies profile for recruitment. you'll grab an opportunity soon.

Thank you Mr. Atul Khanna for your immediate and valuable response. As you said i will enhance my skills and accept even little less salary if the profile is good , Even I am not very keen on compensation at this point of time i am very much looking into the role, either similar role or another challenging role. I would like to clarify from your posting as you have mentioned to search on profiles, it is about the position ? or your suggestion to look for resumes of similar kind?

Dear Sandya,
I have read your post and I think you may be right on some aspects of not getting job specially the marriage part. In sub-continent, most of girls left their jobs after marriage that is why, despite of talent, recruiters do not hire them but the world does not end here. Let interviewer know that you are more interested in your career then marriage. Remember interview is always two way process so, it is not necessary that you can say and answer only that things which are asked. If you think that you there are more things you should add in the interview then you CAN. Explain your marriage plans and career plans during interview and stress out the point which shows that your career is your first priority. It is better to write and practice this discussion at home before going to interview.

yourcareerloin is kind of right. you can mention somewhere in your explanation that you are looking a long carrier first. but that you have to present very sharply while giving other answers related to the carrier growth.
And in my part I have mention that you can search profiles means you can search out opportunities where you are getting new or past role in HR. Not as such spc. it simply means search out big and small opportunities where you can apply and get back yourself in HR.

Dear Sandhya,
Your are young and smartly learning many things in the stride. I advice you to start thinking like an HR, which means you put yourself in the position of the company HR and you have to interview a candidate who is in same condition that you are today what would you do. You will get answer as well as solution on to how to handle the next interview. Experience teaches you lots but don't stop at learning, implement what you have learned from the same. Don' t worry the world is full of opportunities, just grab when you identify one.

Dear Sandhya,
It is nice to find that you are a thorough professional with vision and committment. I am particularly impressed by your choosing Operations, HR and also Training programs without wasting any precious time.I'm sure that there is a great career ahead of you.
Going through your case study, a small gap of a few months is no great deal when compared to a career of at least 40 years which lies ahead of you. In fact all of us "waste" 1/3rd of our life in sleep. However sleep is required for immunity, as well as physical and mental health. Likewise small gaps in career helps us in introspection and retooling our knowledge and skills. i find that you are productively using these opportunities in training programs and writing articles.
Coming to the apparent lack of appropriate opportunities we have to recollect the following facts:
1. The employment market is dull and many employers go for "cheapest quotations" or no recruitment at all. " Gaps" are only excuses for their non professional approach.
2. There could be some hesitation to employ a girl. Again it is applicable to only a few conservative employers and not all. In fact we find many women in top HR posts in several reputed Co.s. That means for a talented and committed person sky is the limit
3..My personal suggestion would be to take up any challenging job which is offered irrespective of the specialization. You can indeed change over to your "first love HR" as and when one comes through.
4. You can also simultaneously pursue the correspondence program on "Diploma in Training and Development" conducted by ISTD, New Delhi. This is indeed a high value program recognized all over the profession.
5. If no job is coming in handy in the immediate future, you can join as a part-time/full time Lecturer in any of the MBA Colleges/Management Institutes. This would indeed be a very satisfying experience. However, dont tell them that it is a stop-gap arrangement. If you dont insist on a high starting salary, I'm sure you shall win the offer with your hands down.
All the best!

Thank you Dr. Thomas i would surely take up a challenging job as you suggested. Even i recently visited that ISTD Delhi Website for that training course. I am looking for more details on the course structure, I may apply for the same or any relevant course . And i am not very keen on applying for lecturer in college. I would like to once again thank you for all your suggestions. Your words even boosted my confidence level.
