Anywhich ways, For being a HR generalist, there is no specific subject or paremeter that if have knowledge then you would become a HR generalist. The are lot of activities in HR function apart from Statutory part. It does mean that you should know the managerial part as well as the statutory part. From selection of an employee up to his/her seperation, there are enormous activities lies in HR function.
I do not know your back ground, still I would suggest you to take one topic from HR function and spend 1 week time to be master in that.

Reporting to the Human Resources Director, performs a broad spectrum of duties for the Human Resources Office. Responsibilities are varied and complex requiring a high degree of confidentiality, discretion, independent judgment, and initiative. Requires a working knowledge of responsibilities of other HR professional positions in office.
Major Duties
- Collects and analyzes HR data; identifies opportunities, defines problems, and recommends viable solutions to management, which include action plans and time tables.
- Serves as support and backup to other HR professionals as necessary. Acts in place of HR professionals in short- and/or long-term absences.
- Leads and/or assists in the development of Human Resources manuals, forms, reports, etc. Assists with establishing project plans and process flow mapping via Gantt and flow charts. Requires research, discovery, and detailed understanding of objectives, concepts, and processes.
- Assists with special HR initiatives and projects as needed. This work is often complex requiring strong analytical and quantitative method skills (i.e. benchmarking analysis, CDD report evaluations, audits, data interpretation, etc.)
- Assists in the preparation and submission of required government reports, such as EEO-1, VETS-100, and the WHOI Affirmative Action Plan(s).
- Maintaining a strong working relationship with MIS, coordinates information management.
- Reviews, updates, and maintains information on HR website.
- Responsible for the data integrity of the HR system and serves as the primary source for data entry into, and update of, HR system database from information taken from confidential employee records and other various documentation. Supervises the work of others involved with data entry.
- Works with Payroll and HR Staff to ensure efficient and timely data communication and transfer of data between the Human Resources and Payroll departments.
- Updates all HR system tables consistent with employee data maintenance needs.
- Responsible for creating password request for Employee Online and/or re-establishing connections resulting from lockouts. Notifies employee when access to the application is established.
- Responsible for weekly vendor interface program files (e.g., medical, dental) and troubleshoots issues that may arise.
- Performs other duties as the supervisor may deem necessary
