My friend lied about a personal reason for employment gap of 6 months. Will it cause issues in BGV?

It depends on the BGV team because in my organization, the BGV conducts verification of previous employment based on facts/employment details submitted by new joiner in joining kit/HR system. The BGV team does not focus on any employment gaps as "they assume" it would have been cleared/explained by the candidate during HR interview. However, if your friend's personal reason is linked to any medical issue, the BGV team would expect medical reports. If he was associated with a third-party company or a small startup firm, then they would ask for references or perhaps a relieving letter.
