Hi,
Does Halo effect affects the recruitment process, if affected what would be the repercussions.
Eg: If during the recruitment process the interviewer recruits the candidate based on his attribute like the way he dresses and the way he talks. Will this affect the work environment of the company if he joins.
Pour your opinion.
Best regards

Halo effect is one of the perceptional bias which indicates that perception is based on only certain characters like intellegence, dress etc.
In the selection process if the intervieswer selects the candidate based on any one character which he admirers, then there is a possibility of selecting a wrong candidate. This will lead to poor performance followed by turn over in the later period leaving the company in a great loss.
In another angle halo effect gives a positive signal.Certain posts need special characters to perform the job in a best manner. For example a sales girl should be proficient in local language and should communicate well. For this type of jobs selecting the candidates based on one character that is candidate communicating well will be a best option. In this case selection based on halo effect will be advantageous.

These attributes should also be present.

Sometimes, there might not another attribute to check for, say, What else will you see while recruiting a fresher for Marketing job?

We do not measure or follow up the halo effect, for it is taken for granted. When a candidate is screened in first round, ever noticed that, people who do not dress well and who do not speak well almost do not make for second round. In my 11 years of HR career, I have hired lame and some times even blind people, I regret to say, never a dumb. Communication is very important. We do not hire people who do not communicate with us well for communicating with them over a period of time could be issue.

I have noticed few project stake holders who are short in stature do not hire tall people. I am still looking for some capable HR person who looks like ROCK or STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN. Looking extra manly do not deserve many positions. So do Puny guys. Many, OK, Let me be honest, almost none, who are puny, make up to Middle level, leave alone higher levels of Management.

Many a times, we give an excuse to ourselves.

Recruitment and Selection on the basis of halo affect results in bad hiring. Although most of the companies pay special attention on the dressing and communicating skills but this should not be the only criteria for hiring decisions. Job knowledge, experience and the degree of commitment and enthusiasm is also taken into consideration.
