Hi Senior!

Greetings to all!

I would like to introduce myself. I was working with the manufacturing unit as an HR Generalist and recently joined the IT industry as an HR Manager. As I am just collecting information about the company, I have come to know that this is a startup from the last 2 years with 25 employees. I am not able to grasp exactly what is going on as they are primarily focusing on recruitment and getting everything lined up. This situation is making me doubtful about what steps to take.

I expressed my concerns about not understanding the appropriate way of my work. Due to this, I am unable to take any action or make decisions. Please guide me as soon as possible regarding this situation.

Thanks and regards,
Madhavi

First and foremost, keep yourself up to date with knowledge about the laws that affect HR and your particular industry. For example, the Shops and Establishments Act of your state.

Check which compliances need to be done - PF, ESIC, etc., and see whether things are up to date or where they are lagging.

Check the state of employee personal records.

Examine their recruitment practices.

How do you attract candidates - through advertisements, employee referrals, etc.?

Meet all HODs and establish a working relationship with them.

Ensure all your employees have proper job descriptions.

Is there an HRIS operational in the office?

Review the company policies regarding leave, recruitment, exits, discipline, etc. Are they up to date and in line with legal requirements and standard industry practices?

Address any health and safety issues if they exist.

Remember, with a higher salary comes greater responsibility. Therefore, put in hard work and evaluate the HR situation comprehensively, making improvements and changes where necessary. In the final analysis, the HR manager may be behind the scenes, but without human resources, many companies would simply break down. Keeping employees happy, organized, and engaged, every business needs the vision and direction of an HR manager to keep everything moving smoothly.
