Dear Folks,

Greetings of the Day!

I have newly joined as an HR Manager at a 3-star Hotel in Chennai. The Hotel has been operating for the past 10 years without a proper HR department. I have to implement all the HR activities and policies in this Hotel. I have experience in placement consultancies and hospitals, but I lack proper exposure in the hotel industry. Could anyone please guide me on daily and monthly HR activities for a 3-star hotel?

Awaiting your replies.

Thanks,
M. Vinoth Kumar,
HR Manager.

Hi Vinoth,

I hope we can't say anything for you because as you are aware of the below activities:

1. Please ensure that your company or organization has all HR documents such as Joining Documents, appointment letter, increment letter, exit documents, leave cards, and ID cards.
2. Does your organization have all the necessary legal licenses to run the business, like shops & establishment certificate, professional tax registration, PF code, C11- ESIC?
3. Does your organization have an employee handbook that includes policies on recruitment, selection, performance appraisal, bonus, incentives, attendance, timings, leaves, separation policy, employee benefits, mobile limit policy, and travel policy?

Please take care of the above activities.

  • I fully agree with Mr. Ashok Negidi, HR of Hotel. HR activities in a hotel are no different from those in a hospital. Mr. Ashok has advised all of you on practices that are commonly implemented in most hotels. If you require any further assistance or information on this topic, please feel free to post your queries. The senior members will provide guidance accordingly.

  • I also recently joined the Human Resource department of a restaurant. I had to start the whole department from scratch. It was very challenging at first, but now things are falling into place. However, a lot of creativity and innovation is needed to keep the crew (staff) motivated. Is there anyone in the hotel industry who can help me out with motivation tips?

    Thank you.

  • Dear Ashok,

    Greetings for the day!

Thank you for your guidelines. I found most of the below-mentioned documents (joining documents, leave cards, ID cards) available. However, they lack policies regarding selection, performance appraisal, bonuses, incentives, separation policy, and employee benefits. I have implemented the appointment letter, offer letter, employee performance analysis, and appraisal. I still have to work on the aspects you mentioned, and I am confident that I will bring everything under control.

    Thank you,
    Vinoth Kumar. M
