Hi,

Apart from the core technical training, the two other topics for training that could be very relevant to an R&D setup are:

- Creativity/Out-of-the-box thinking/innovation strategies
- R&D with cost savings as the focus/Costing implications in R&D

Dear Priya,

Your question is small but its reply is quite long.

Recently, I conducted training for an automotive company. For this, I conducted a survey of automobile companies worldwide as well as in India.

When you look at their financial reports, you will find their management efficiency ratios. You should measure similar ratios for your company as well. Once you measure them, it will help you in benchmarking.

A classic example is the Inventory Turnover Ratio. While for Maruti Suzuki India it is 30.47 for FY 2010-2011, for my client, it was just 2.0.

Most Indian companies lag behind because their leadership does not encourage the implementation of knowledge acquired during degree courses in engineering, management, etc. Implementing this does not require any creativity.

Returning to the Inventory Turnover Ratio, my client did not implement the basics of material management, let alone the concepts of Supply Chain Management. This resulted in a significant difference in the Inventory Turnover Ratio. The same is the case with other ratios too.

Thanks,

You need to conduct a Training Needs Assessment (TNA) of all your staff to determine exactly what training your organization needs.

Every organization is different; therefore, there is no generic, one-size-fits-all training program. Once you have determined the training required, you can then write the course to meet your needs or outsource the training to a specialist training organization. You will find all the information you need on TNA by using the Research Box at the top of the page.

Dear Ms. Priya,

You can consider the following topics:
1. Quality Function Deployment (QFD)
2. PPAP
3. FMEA
4. APQP

These topics are generally of interest for Research and Development (R&D), but their relevance also depends on the existing level of skills. If the audience is not familiar with or not using them regularly, Statistical Process Control (SPC) and the 7QC Tools (both old and new) should be the starting point.
