Dear All,
I am Vijai Amirtharaj. I am pursuing MSW (HR) and I am a project student in an esteemed organization in Tamil Nadu. While I was in discussion with my boss, a topic came up regarding having fun at work in a manufacturing setup. Upon searching our CiteHR website, I found many discussions about fun at work in the IT sector.
Let us discuss fun at work initiatives in manufacturing setups.
I hope this discussion will be helpful for all.

Fun at work primarily depends on how each employee (and, of course, the bosses) perceives themselves personally. Secondly, to achieve a total sense of fun, efforts need to be made by every HR department to ensure that the workforce doesn't treat employment as a compulsion and a kind of 9 to 5 'job'.
Employment needs to be perceived as an integral part of one's life where there is something for everybody, and that includes the employees' family members too!
For more details on how it can be achieved, write to me at creativesinmotion@yahoo.com. Good luck to all HR Managers!

Dear Vijay,
Fun at work can be implemented through occasional events or through continuous practice. Please consider the Fish Philosophy. It might take persuasion at the management level, but it works wonders for the organization. Please plan your program and events with a time frame, budget, and a result that would contribute to the organization.
You can arrange weekly/monthly events to bring teams together, for example, arrange for a collage competition for Safety at the Plant.
You can initiate programs such as 5S and make one employee SPOC from each team. You can even conduct competitions between teams to achieve the 5S. Create a fun environment through audits and quizzes on 5S.
Please watch the video in this link to get an idea of the Fish Philosophy: FiSH Sticks Training Video.
We look forward to hearing your success story on this.
All the best.

Fun at manufacturing establishments in India includes the following: celebrating 'organisation day', celebrating 'sports day', celebrating 'ayuday puja' in South and 'Viswakarma puja' in the North. At the section level, employees normally celebrate 'retirements'. Some establishments also arrange outings during holidays. In many places, these initiatives are taken by the unions rather than the management.
Many factories have cultural associations that conduct cultural events outside of working hours and during holidays. Fun also comes from participating in other related activities such as 'quality circles', 'suggestion schemes', etc.

Dear all,
I am extremely grateful to you all; this discussion is very useful for me. I would like to specify about Mr. Ravishank's quote: "Don't do fun in the manufacturing industry; employees will be in danger, as they work on machines. It's a critical job; they could lose a body part or even die. Only employees in the service industry have fun at work. Have you ever seen a doctor laughing during an operation or pilots, or police having fun at work? All you can do is not mix work and fun like alcohol and water."
It is absolutely correct, but this discussion is not only about fun during work hours; it may be fun during weekends, after work hours, rest intervals, etc.
According to my personal opinion, nothing is impossible. We might have never seen a doctor laughing during surgery, but he/she has to laugh after the surgery. Let us think of something innovative and try to implement it. I need your help to achieve this.
I can sense your positive mindset while I am reading your comment. I hope all your colleagues in your workplace will be happy always; that is the major role of HR.

Hi All,
In our company, we celebrate Experience Sharing as Navprakash. During this event, staff members share their experiences from their personal and professional lives, or from any training programs they have attended. Another aspect of our celebrations is the birthday celebration known as Shubhkamana Diwas. On the same day as a staff member's birthday, we decorate their workstation before they arrive at the office and present them with a smiley ball.
Thanks.
