Hello All,
I need advice from you regarding my issue...
I'm basically an Engineer by qualification but have not been employed in the Engineering field since my graduation. I have worked in other fields.
Now, I got an opportunity to work for an Engineering company in my own field of graduation. The company needed someone with a minimum of 6 years of experience in the engineering industry. So, in order to be eligible for application, I have modified my resume to fit their requirements, i.e., changed my previous employers and the nature of my work to fit the engineering company's requirements.
Then I posted it to the company and got the call for an interview. I had brushed up on my engineering subjects, cleared the technical interview, and have been selected for the job.
In order to make sure the background check clears, I have already arranged for some of my previous company colleagues and friends to be the reference. If the new engineering company were to call my references or email them to ask for a background check, it will get cleared without any trouble.
However, I now have a query which is two-part:
1. Calling and emailing references provided - is that all a company would do in terms of background verification, or have I missed out covering anything else?
2. If in case the company finds out that my previous employment was incorrectly provided and my background check fails, what will the company do? Will they terminate me? Can the company put any case against me? If the company can put a case against me, from your experience, will they pursue the case?
I know this is not strictly ethical what I did, but it's my dream job, and I never had the opportunity to pursue it for a long time... finally got an opportunity and wanted to get the most out of it. In order to make sure I succeed in this job, I have already started studying up everything about the practical applications of the engineering job + my qualification is also in the same engineering field so it definitely helps... I'm sure I will be able to perform to the company's satisfaction if I'm given an opportunity.
I kindly request you to help me clarify the above matter... Please!!!
Thanks!
