Dear All,
Our firm is small, and we typically have alternate Saturdays off. However, in a situation where urgent work arises to be completed over the weekend or if an employee has pending work for the week, and the company decides to call them in to work on one of the alternate Saturdays to address the urgent or pending tasks, but the employee does not show up - what actions can the company take?

Without any prejudice and arbitrariness, it is every employer's inalienable and non-negotiable prerogative, privilege, and right to change work shift/days due to exigencies of work and properly communicate such changes in advance followed by in writing/notice. The employer may decide to take disciplinary action for failure to comply with/obey employer's/management's order/instruction. Let's ensure that the concerned management/managers are fully aware of the disciplinary action steps to be taken/procedures prescribed.

He is entitled to the pay for the day. Inform him accordingly, and also that the unauthorized absence entails a break in service with all its adverse consequences. My experience is that such an action would have a longstanding effect.

Thank you for your response. I would like to inquire about whether an employee is entitled to additional pay, and if so, at what rate. Regarding the decision to work alternate Saturdays, is this solely at the discretion of management for small firms? In cases of urgent situations where management requires employees to work on alternate Saturdays, is it compulsory to provide additional compensation? Furthermore, if an employee fails to comply with such a request and does not show up for urgent work, can the management deduct their pay for that particular day?
