Dear Teammates,
Ours is a Multi-national Company, and we would like to draft clear cut policy for the Employee. I found troubling while drafting the same, because one question is :
1. When an employee is eligible for his/her 1st Increment ?
2. Whether Probationer / Trainee is eligible for Increment ?
3. Whether an Employee is guaranteed amount of increment say Rs. 1000/- or any amount ( even if that fellow is not performing up to the extent)
If somebody can through the light on the issue, i will be very much thankful.

An employee is eligible for increment upon confirmation in service.
Employees under probation or trainees during their training period will not be eligilbe for any increment.
upon completion of probation period appraisal, when he/she is confirmed in service you can add the increment in his salary.
In case of trainees upon getting regularized in service, the applicable CTC upon regularization will be paid to them.
The amount of increment to be paid to the employees is a policy decision of the company. Usually, it is based on the annual performance rating of the employee for the year. An outstanding employee may get a very high increement which compared to a average rated employee. Also, there are cases where a poor rated employee may not get any increment at all.

Hi Tushar,

1. When an employee is eligible for his/her 1st Increment ?

Firstly, as per the company standard increment is provided on performance based or on yearly basis. If performance based the employee appraisal will be rated on KRA(key result area) say quarterly or half yearly or annually. (appraisal process could be self appraisal and immediate superior)

In case yearly basis. appraisal process should be followed alongwith the rating given by respective department heads. The increment will be given on percentage wise.

2. Whether Probationer / Trainee is eligible for Increment ?

Of course. the probation period will be 6 months. Two things to be notified whether confirmation or extension. In case of extension there will not be any increment. In case of confirmation either increment can be given based on his performance or only a confirmation letter with or without any increment.

3. Whether an Employee is guaranteed amount of increment say Rs. 1000/- or any amount ( even if that fellow is not performing up to the extent)

I think if the employee is not performing well ( based on percentage) the increment would be between 500/- to 750/- only. The rating would be given only after disucssing with individual employee about the "non performing).

Dear Sir,
Normally we are revising the salaries i.e. increments in the Month of January. Now suppose an employee who joins on 1st january,05 is eligible for increment as per your opinion on 1st january,06 ( i.e. after one year) but suppose an employee who join the duties on 1st june,05 will he also eligible for the increment in January,06 ?
Kindly clarify

Hi Tushar,

You have to decide the cutoff date for including the employees in the appraisal. Most organizations keep it at 6 months. That means if the increment is effective on 1st April, then anyone who joined before 1st October will be appraised in the April Cycle appraisal.
