Greetings to all,
Can anyone help me with my query? I'm pursuing an MBA in the 4th semester in HR & Marketing from a college affiliated with JNTU University. Apart from that, I am working as an Office Assistant in the Purchase Department of a Cement Manufacturing Company. I have three years of experience in the Purchase Department. I want to pursue a career in HR. Can anyone suggest how I should plan and what courses will help me transition into an HR role? Will my MBA be useful for planning my career in HR? I am in complete dilemma. Please help me out.

Hi,
It is better for you to continue in the Purchase function because you have 3 years of experience. It will be easier for you to grow in your career by staying in the same function. If you try to enter HR, you will be considered as a fresher.
A PG diploma in Supply Chain Management, Material Management, or Logistics may help advance your career.

Dear Jyothsna,
As suggested by Mr. Narayan, it is better to continue with the Purchase department itself. If you really want to change your career, it is advisable to discuss this with the management and gradually initiate the transition to HR functions. This approach may help in advancing your career by shifting from Purchase to HR.

Thank you, Mr. Narayan and Mr. Jeevarathnam, for your valuable suggestions. I am willing to shift to the HR department, which is relevant to my education and my dream. I would like to gain the knowledge that would make me fit for a competent HR role. Additionally, I am eager to pursue my career in a reputed MNC within the IT sector. My educational background is in B.Sc Computers.
In this scenario, do I need to conceal my current job and start fresh in my career? Could you please guide me on the path I should take to achieve my dream by acquiring the necessary qualifications, knowledge, and how to approach potential job opportunities?
Thanks and regards,

Dear Jyothsna,
I would like to suggest that you please sit by yourself in a quiet place, think deeply, and answer the following questions:
1. What do you want to do in life?
2. What do you want to be in life?
3. What kind of work do you want to do?
4. What are your career aspirations in the short run and in the long run?
5. What are your likes and dislikes?
6. What are your strengths and areas for improvement?
7. What are your skills/competencies?
8. Are your strengths, skills, and likes aligned with the kind of career you want to build?
In my opinion, you will be more successful in your career if your skills, natural talents, and personality traits are aligned with your career choice. If this alignment exists in your case, then pursue a career in HR; otherwise, stay in your current role.
If you decide to pursue a career in HR, the best strategy is to request a lateral transfer to the HR function within your current employer. Consider seeking a new employer if your request is not granted. Making a major functional change within the same company is relatively easier. It can be challenging to simultaneously pursue a significant career transition and change employers, but it is not impossible. With intense desire, you can achieve your dreams.
If you decide to look for a job in HR with a different employer, consider taking a short practical course in HR to enhance your skills and increase your chances of finding the job you desire. Some institutions offer short courses in HR.
