Hi all,

Please help me. Ours is an engineering industry. Now, how do we classify workers as skilled or semi-skilled? We mainly have lathe work and grinders. Workers claim that they deserve the skilled category, but what are the exact requirements for a skilled worker? Is a school degree or technical degree necessary?

Please assist me and provide me with information from labor laws as well.

Please buy Maharashtra Minimum Wages Act, 1948 with rules. Under the title SCHEDULE (ENGG INDUSTRY), you will find all the skills defined thoroughly. The degree/diploma has no role to play. It is the competency on the job that counts.

Dear Member,

Please visit the site paycheck.in to find the definitions of unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled, and highly skilled workman. State Governments declare minimum rates of wages for different categories of workmen, and a set of different designations are classified within these categories. If your employment is listed in the schedule employments under the Minimum Wages Act, 1948 by the Government, then refer to the minimum wages notification for your employment to determine which designation falls under which category. For example, if a grinder is classified as skilled, you are required to pay the minimum wages fixed or declared for the skilled category. Ensure you provide the appropriate designation at the time of appointment and then refer to the notification to determine the category under which the concerned individual will fall.
