Hi Sreehari,

Welcome to cithr, friend. I hope you will actively participate in the forum discussions, which will be beneficial to one and all.

Now, could you please let us know what the present scenario is in your company? How many safety standards are in place? Are you receiving management support for improving safety or not? What challenges are you facing in implementation, and what standards do you aim to achieve in safety?

Please come up with your specific requirements. We are supported by many seniors who have a positive mindset of sharing knowledge. You will surely benefit from this forum if you show real interest.

You are in the right place, and we look forward to your active participation.

Hi Dipil,

Thanks for the reply, sir. Awareness of safety measures among our industrial engineering workers is very low. Kindly advise on ways and means to educate and improve the safety standards among the workers.

@Sriharisri

First of all, I appreciate you coming back with your concerns.

I would suggest the following for raising awareness among workers about safety. Training them is one solution for increasing awareness, but how we conduct it plays a vital role. Simply gathering workers at the site and delivering a great speech won't be very effective. Instead, you should first request management for a training room to organize training sessions for workers. By conducting structured classroom training sessions, workers will feel that their employer is looking out for their well-being. Of course, there should be a reciprocal effort from the workers as well. They will pay attention to what the instructor is teaching them rather than just passing the time, which will demonstrate the value of the training at the site.

Once you have secured a training room, you need to assess the training needs of your workers, identifying where they may be lacking. Begin with programs such as "Need for Organizing Safety" and "Roles and Responsibilities Towards Safety," and then move on to specific subject-based training sessions.

As a Safety Officer, you cannot solely be responsible for raising awareness among workers. You should involve your line management in this effort. Implement a mandatory system of conducting Tool Box Talks in each section before commencing work. Communicate with senior management and issue a circular making it obligatory to conduct Tool Box Talks. Support your line management by providing various discussion topics for these sessions.

Organize spot quizzes for workers, asking questions related to previous training sections. Encourage them, and you will surely see positive results.

I hope this advice will be of some assistance to you.

Greetings to all.

For improving safety performance, we should review the entire system from the starting point.

Safety Policy - Is there a safety policy declared by the occupier, factory manager, or CEO and made available to all the relevant persons? Refer to the Factories Act, 1948 for this.

If there is no Safety Policy, convince your management to have one and help your management formulate a policy.

Draw an action plan in line with the Safety policy - keeping in mind the long-term and short-term factors.

A safety committee should be formed, ensuring it is a functional committee and not just a dummy committee.

All unsafe conditions should be taken care of in a manner that makes shop floor personnel feel it is for their betterment. This will give the impression that top management is serious about Safety.

Ideas should be invited, and if any idea gets implemented, the person generating the idea should be publicly appreciated. A good way would be to post an appreciation letter on the notice board.

Persons prone to accidents or unsafe actions, either due to work conditions or their habits, should be identified and observed. A counseling session should be arranged in a group or individually, as the case may be. The person handling the counseling session should be skilled.

Based on accident reports, near miss reports, and their investigations and analysis, factors with high priority should be identified, and training modules should be prepared. Training should be provided after conducting a needs identification. As correctly mentioned by Mr. Dipil, a nice training hall with a pleasant ambiance makes a great impact.

Posting relevant factors in the form of one-point lessons at various points, one point a week, can have some impact.

These may be a few steps to begin with.

Best Regards,

Raman.
