Hi,
Employee Relations is like a bridge between management and employees. As long as employees are engaged in the right way, they are productive. You can include activities like having open houses with them to understand and take feedback from them. Normally, HR conducts exit interviews. I feel stay interviews are more important than exit interviews. Employees feel they belong to the organization when they know what's happening with them and around them. Communication will be a big task for employee relations. You can help management in the disciplinary process and handling grievances for the employees in employee relations. You can also include counseling employees as part of ER.

Hi,
Employee engagement simply states the way in which an employee has these three things:
1. Inspired by their work ("I want to do this"),
2. Committed ("I am dedicated to the success of what I am doing"), and
3. Enjoys what they are doing ("I love what I am doing").
A detailed study about employee engagement is provided in the following link: [Employee engagement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Employee_engagement).
I hope this gives you a better understanding.
