Dear seniors and friends,
As an initiative to encourage employee belongingness with the firm we have introduced Birthday Celebrations. For this., every month birthday wishes for employees who have birthday on that month are put up on the notice board and by the end of the month we celebrate their birthdays by cake cutting (which is sponsored by the company.)
Now recently few of the employees showed disapproval of the same claiming that others end up nagging the individual with birthday to give treats. It has also been noticed that the some employees would be absent on the day of their birthday probably to avoid spending on treats or so.
Now my question is ,Should I call off this whole Birthday Celebration Scheme ,should I stop putting up birthday notifications or should I continue.
I would really appreciate some help. Please share your opinion.
Regards
Elsa

Seek the concurrence of the particular employee and if he/she agrees, you can arrange celebrations. Withdrawal of a scheme which may be liked by the majority, is not advisable. Pon

In my organization we put it on notice board but no celebration. We provide some money to each employee on their Birthday as a token of their B day gift. This money comes along with their previous month salery and same is mentioned in the respective salery slip. This money is from company.

Dear All,
thank you for sharing your views. :) :D
I am also of the opinion that carrying out such practices will motivate employees and imbibe a feeling of being a part of an organization that cares.
But how shall i convince the few who oppose this practice as waste of time and money ?? Also i dont want an employee's birthday to be a a day of emotional burden/ stress for him/her. Is there a solution to these?

Hi Elsa,
What u can do is with cake cutting u can also give some snacks like samosa, sandwiches etc.. and announce as the B'day party of the B'day Boy or Girl.. in this way people will not nag that person for extra party and the person will also not get burdened.

you can do one thing... u can give a small tea party at lunch tym with a few snacks.... just for 1 or half an hour, so dat other employee will not create any burden to the employee whose b'day is celebrating.

Elsa,

Talk to the individuals who do not support the practice and try to identify the reason why they are showing their disapproval. Try to make them part of the solution rather than cutting and pasting processes used by others. All situations are different and cultures are different. If individuals who make the culture develop the solution, then the same are accepted and can have sustainable results. Make sure that employees know why is this being done in simplest and clear words so they understand the meaning not in a language that they are unfamiliar with or is vague. e.g instead of saying "company will give bonus after a target sales and margin is achieved", it is communicated that "benefits will be shared with employees after EBIT reaches Rs xxx lacs for the quarter".

Another thought I will like to share. You may have to think backwards about when you started the celebration of employees birthday, did the employees embrace it or had indifferent feelings about the same?

Did the response change over time and if answer is "Yes" then you must identify the cause(s), why? What changed? How it was communicated to existing employees and new employees who joined? etc....

In some of the organizations I have worked, for birthday company provided them a paid holiday on the same day or if approved by individual's supervisor on any day of their choice. But this way of celebration was implemented based on the poll taken from the company employees and results were posted.

Before the polls it was communicated that a method that the majority decides and company management agrees to will be the used to celebrate employee birthday.

The employees were given choice to provide novice ideas how to celebrate birthdays in first round and in 2nd round decision was made based on majority and management decision.

Hope this helps.
