Hi Friends,
I am working as Manager-HR in a steel company in Kolkata since last 6 months. Since this is a new company, things are not organised. Most of the time I do recruitment(at times sourcing, co-ordinating with vendors), exit formalities, issuing the offer. The company don't have any policy, performance appraisal, etc. Just for the name sake, I am Manager, but I do all the work that an executive does. Although, they are flexible in timing, and work load is also quite low as compared to other concerns. My concern is how will I justify my position in the next job, when I don't do managerial work and shall I stick to this organisation for some more time or look for a change?
Please suggest.

Hi Sweta,
For job change ...I don't think its a favorable time to do so as it's been 6 months you must have been confirmed there.....company's are laying off staff and you are secure....search for something good and than switch over.....Think this way at least we have a secure job in our hands as existing conditions are worse these days...
Now coming to your KRA as a manager...You have said that Company is not organized and your are doing a work which is suppose to be done by a executive...Firstly I must say that if company is not organized than being a manger take initiative and make it organized...In this you may justify your managerial work as well...Introduce new policies..take initiatives..proof your managerial skills.....
In you free times do enhance your knowledge...
I am not much experienced but I thought of answering your query this way...

Thank you dear for your suggestion. I shall work for some more time. My only concern was there's no value addition to my career in this organisation. I was previously working with Mafoi, so whatever I have learnt in Mafoi, I am appllying that. There;s nothing extra i m learning.

Thank you for your response. I think you are right. I shall spend some more time in this organisation. Till date I have been successfull in taking one initiatives i.e. organising welfare activity of our colleagues. I tried for performance appraisal also, but MD, whom I report to said no. He said let things be organised first, then we'll implement new policies. I think I'll have to wait for another years time. Under this situation what you would have done:?:

I understand that it is really easy to give advise but dealing with it is something else......but If I would have been in your shoes than defiantly I would try for implementing new things of employees betterment which would act as retention as well .....as in "Reward and recognition program"...I am sure your MD would defiantly say yes to this.....event celebrations within the office...Talent engagement...etc.........Start an exercise of getting a feedback form employees to improve..Make a questionnaire based on it and then act accordingly.....or else just get indulge in your studies(enhancing knowledge)...Keep sending HR mails to all the employees.....Many companies doesn't have a Employee ID ..if you can start getting these done.....
Prepare a proposal of all these and present to him...he will defiantly say yes to atleast one....

Hi,
I would suggest that this time thinking of change is totally wrong.
You have been appointed there as a Manager to do start new things and implement new policies.
if they wanted to only run the same process, they would have been appointed a Executive.
Take it as a opportunity and challenge.
In some big companies, employees only follow the existing process, there is nothing to do anything creative and new.
I hope you will understand and think on it.

Hello Sweta,
I can understand ur feeling because i was also in a steel plant as Personnel Manager. U are right there are no any law applicable and work pressure is very high but as per my view it is not a good time for change u should to get experience and then change.U can talk with me.

I have initiated farewell parties which was not in practice before. I am trying my best to implement new policies and based on your suggestions, i will keep on trying my level best to convince my MD that these changes are desirable. Your suggestions are always welcome.

Dear Sweta,
It's a time of Global recession so might be because of that your boss might be contradicting for your new suggestion. In this situation please understand what your boss is looking for and give ideas as such which helps the organization in cutting cost and improve the work
And make sure your boss also looking for the same. If it is very necessary then go for one assistant for you in your daily support

Dear Sweta,
I think its an oppurtunity to learn for you in that organisation. where in your designated as manager & i also think you have power to do some changes.
If i was in your position i would have set some policies in HR. Setting bench marks will be a great initiative for you & your career.
If you can do so, you can show this as your achievement. Setting some standards is not a small thing & also make things in a organised way.
If you are taking this initiative you can surely get approval from your superiors.
